Description

The Photo: Top newly emerged Hover Fly. In the upper left corner you can see the empty pupa. Notice the wings are still compressed and folded up. Bottom is the pupa as found and on the day of the emergence. ________________________________ On the 21st of this month I found a Syrphid Fly (Hover Fly) Pupa on my shrub. I decided to clip the small branch and take in inside and keep it in a jar hoping it would mature. Yesterday it did. Although I missed her emerging by what I think is about a minute or two, I did manage to get shots of her right after she came out. (Checked it before lunch nothing changed, came back after a bite and there she was out! ugh) The ID should be Allograpta Obliqua. It's a female. It was really a treat for me to catch this much of the new life coming about. From the time I got the first shot to the wings fully expanded was about 2-3 minutes. Once they started it went pretty fast. She was very docile and relaxed the whole time. Moving about just a little. After the wings were fully open, I took her outside and let her relax and sun on some flowers I have in the backyard. Left her there after some photos and came back in about 20 mins and she had gone. Good Luck little one! I will have a couple more shots in the coming days to show the changes that took place over the hour or so I took photos. The bottom shots are the pupa on the dates given. The one on the right (4-29) is the morning before she emerged. Thanks for looking. -Bruce PS Found another Pupa 2 days ago and yesterday took that one in as well. Maybe I will catch the eclose (emergence) this time since I now know what the pupa looks like the day of it coming out.

Cool collage and great detail. I keep an empty 5 gallon fish tank for just this reason. I have brought a number of eggs and pupa inside to see what emerges. It is always a thrill. Thanks for sharing. Lee

Awesome collage Bruce! Those wings don't look large enough for her to fly, so perhaps a bird caught a lucky meal.
