Description

I’m standing, on the grounds, of the Canadian Museum of Civilization, in Hull, Quebec Province, Canada – shooting across the Ottawa River at Canada’s Parliament buildings on Parliament Hill, Ottawa, Canada. Its a Gothic revival suite of buildings including the Peace Tower (officially the Tower of Victory and Peace), with its focal bell and 16 foot (4.8m) diameter clock. The tower's flagpole holds symbolic significance, and acts as the flagpole of the nation. This tower, completed in 1927, replaced the Victoria Tower, which had burned down in 1916. The tower is 302 ft 6 in (92.2m) high. The Nepean sandstone structure has a roof of reinforced concrete covered with copper. The complex has a multitude of stone carvings, including approximately 370 gargoyles, grotesques, and friezes, keeping with its Gothic style. The round building, on the river side of the complex is the Library of Parliament. Originally the site of a military base in the 18th and early 19th centuries, development of the site into a governmental precinct began in 1859, by Queen Victoria as the capital of the Province of Canada. The building to the left of Parliament is the Fairmont Château Laurier hotel with 429 rooms and suites. This is one of the sister hotels to the Château Frontenac in Quebec City. The cement structure, at the water’s edge, between these two buildings, is the Rideau Canal or Rideau Waterway, connecting the city of Ottawa on the Ottawa River for 123 miles, to the city of Kingston, Ontario on Lake Ontario. Some information from Wikipedia. Photo taken in October, early 1990s, with a film camera and recently scanned. ZOOM is a must. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments. Dana I will be missing for a few days while I have a shattered rear molar dug out of my jaw.
