...no, I really won't be there:) But recently I had to change planes in Phoenix and I thought those of you who have never been to Phoenix might find these shots taken out my window interesting. The desert vistas are great in all directions. This is worth a ZOOM:) Phoenix is the home of one of our favorite Rendo photographers and world travelers (Sig, also known as, junge1). Sig's Gallery Top frame shows the Northeast corner of the Phoenix metroplex. The mountains are part of the McDowell Regional Park. The center frame shows one of many upscale communities build around manmade lakes and golf courses. White roofs are "in" to reflect heat and keep air conditioning costs down. You can't live in Phoenix without air conditioning. Phoenix is tied with Las Vegas for second on the suniest cities in the USA list with sunshine 85% of the time. A jet airliner isn't supposed to be operated in temperatures above 127 degrees F. Temperatures on the ground at the airport have exceeded that temperature. The bottom frame shows us (your's truly in a Southwest airliner) on the east side of Phoenix. The airport further east (center of image) is Falcon Field Airport in Mesa, Arizona. Our flight is about to bank to the right for final approach to Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport. So, that's your glimpse of Phoenix. Hope you enjoyed your flight. The next flight to Kansas City leaves in an hour and a half:) Oh, and yes the terminal is nicely air conditioned for your comfort. WiFi is free. Bill:) P.S. I just discovered that Marilyn (beachzz) has put up an aerial photo on her flight going into San Francisco. Click Here "Getting Late at the Lake" thumb_2053076.jpg

WOW! I love aerial shots of massive urban sprawls. The view from your window was amazing and I love the urban geometry and the scruffy, wrinkled desert: such a contrast! Great colors and shapes though, I found myself wanting to get lost in viewing the whole thing, and in a weird way this reminds me of something I saw while flying from Dortmund, Germany to Prague...I saw a familiar stretch of the Vltava River--the not-so-pretty part--and all I could think was: "WOW! It looks so much better from up here. You can't smell the rust either." Long story behind that, but suffice it to say, aerial views of cities (and waterways) will always intrigue me. Funny how Phoenix (or any city) also look like the planet Coruscant (in the Star Wars universe) but then that planet is covered by ONE giant city. I'm rambling on, and on, here, but that's because this image has stirred up so many memories and associations, almost as if each individual thought can be found in each of the buildings or residential blocks you flew over. This is marvelous.

I like the idea of 85% sunshine but those temps would be too extreme for me. Fascinating glimpse of the Arizona landscape.

I've been to Phoenix once, and the only part I liked was that long bank into the airport! LOL! Putting these three shots together makes them all work perfectly. Good idea, and nicely done!

Great images Bill. Thanks for the honorable mention. In the top image in the distance on the horizon (near the right side of the frame) appears to be Four Peaks. Four Peaks are about 7,700-ft high and are about 45 miles distance (as the crow flies). Four Peaks are on the west side of Roosevelt Lake (the biggest reservoir in the Salt River Water System. The lake is impounded by Roosevelt Dam, completed in 1911. Four Peaks are usually used to check on visibility, and they are usually visible from downtown.
