Description

While visiting the Hiram M. Chittenden (Ballard) Locks, this 98 year old railroad bridge stands just a little ways off to the east. That is a 500 ton counterweight hanging off the back! "The Salmon Bay Bridge 4 is a bascule type bridge that crosses the ship canal near the Ballard Locks. It was built in 1912 when the Army Corp of Engineers began construction of the locks. Previously there was a wooden trestle that crossed here." Here's the details Bill:) "Down by the Locks" thumb_2054210.jpg

I was amazed to see it raised and lowered while we were there. I'm sure it happens often, but I don't know that I'd ever seen it down before! Wonderful captures of one of my favorite landmarks.

We have only a very few counterweight bridges left on our delta here. I love everyone of them and always thrill to see them in action. Great shots.
