Description

ENCYCLOPEDIA GALACTICA Edition 428193 - Earth English Definition: 'The Ethic Of The Community' A Language English1 expression for an axiom of mutual respect between the various civilizations of the Community2. Simply put, advanced civilizations tend to honour the domains of lesser civilizations and endeavor to not venture into their Sphere of Influence3 in stealth. Nor will more advanced civilizations interfere with lesser civilizations within their domains. In return, less advanced civilizations are expected to stay out of the way of more advanced civilizations and their activities. Although the more evolved civilizations tend to respect their less advanced neighbours as a group, the welfare of individual members may not be a serious moral issue. Like the Sphere of Influence, the Ethic is informal, subject to interpretation and ultimately dependent upon the good faith of members of each civilization. And infringements do occur. In particular, members and technology of Civilization Gardener4 have been detected exploring within the Spheres of other civilizations without making an overt effort to announce their presence. In 24195, their technology was found actively surveying the fourth planet (EGO 1703-00000298712) of the star Acubens (EGO 1703-00000088319 or HD 76756 in older catalogues), within the Sphere for Civilization Humanity. The encounter with the C.S.S. floaters6 was accidental and resulted in no serious incident7. This is important because encounters between technologically unmatched civilizations can be hazardous if not carefully planned. Fortunately most accidental encounters tend to be between automated representatives and not living members. However, the Gardeners should have attempted to advise Humanity of their activity if only to avoid an accidental encounter with living members. There is also the matter of Civilization Sagittarius Red and the selection of Librarians8. Strictly speaking, these encounters occur outside of any particular Sphere of Influence and as such are not considered unethical on the part of the Red members. However, there are factions and cultures within most civilizations that consider the Sagittarian programme to be a form of interference. This in spite of the fact that the Sagittarians take great care to ensure no harm to prospective candidates and that the civilizations in question do benefit from the knowledge imparted to the Librarians. "Even giants fear to tread amongst giants", Karl Gyekye9, late 23rd Century Earth philosopher. This is amazing with shades of so many great works of SF within and behind it. Oh, it's not derivative in any way whatsoever, but as we tend to say in quite a number of circles...great minds think alike. In reading this, I get the sense that I'm reading something written by Ursula K. LeGuin's more technologically-influenced sibling, and there's a nice splash of Jack McDevitt in here too...that sort of casual, cool manner in which something totally alien is presented. It's all your own, it's fantastic, and I'm sure the other writers I mentioned would find themselves as intrigued by this as I am. I love the culture you're developing and revealing. And in terms of the artwork accompanying this, it's fantastic, top notch work. Superb!

Excellent narrative! I love (as a plot element) the idea that advanced civilizations will be careful to respect lesser civilizations as a group, but they won't hesitate to brush aside an individual with no concern for his welfare. I like the admonishing tone of the line about the Gardeners. I doubt that it will effect the Gardeners behavior any. They seem to pretty much do their thing without regarding others. They mission seems to be the be all and end all. The Sagittarian programme is very interesting too. I can see how it would rankle in some quarters. Great image! I love the colors, textures, and composition.
