Description
Captured 5/8/10, around 8:15 AM, about one-half mile from my recidivist residence.

You've heard of Sleepless in Seattle? Well, this is Sleeping on the Sidewalk. At least I think he was asleep, possibly the result of a bad night on the town or a drug overdose. Maybe he got drunk after breaking up with his girlfriend.
When I first saw him, which was about 40 minutes earlier, he was sitting on the bus bench behind him, adjacent to a busy street, stooped over, with shoulders hunched, and holding his head in his hands. And his shoe laces were untied. He was dressed relatively well, and wearing a watch, so he wasn't exactly a derelict. These shots were taken on my return trip. In retrospect, I should have taken fotos of him sitting on the bench also.
Anyway, I took the pictures, walked down the boulevard a bit where I saw a sheriff's car parked by the curb, told the deputy inside, who was typing on a keyboard, to check out the dude who was sleeping, or passed out, on the sidewalk. I then continued home, satisfied that I had done my duty as a law abiding citizen that day.
Why, you ask, didn't I stop and help him? Well, because he had already been questioned by Public Safety officers earlier while he was sitting on the bench, and they just left him sitting there and walked away. And besides, due to past experience, I don't get involved with the weird characters in my area.
Auf weidersehen, thankx for the look-see, and for any and all complimentary comments and favs.

I can say you have a way of finding things to take pictures of:-) And you did right by just informing the Sheriff and leaving, nowadays anything can happen, especially if your not prepared...and I don't think your camera wanted to be a shield...lol Not that the guy would have hurt anyone...you get my drift. I hope.

We have a lot of these characters around here these days; some are quite colourful, others are just a bit scary. Best not to get too close! Nice series of captures of this unfortunate guy.

Poor guy, hope we are never in that position. Great shots though.

Rare sight for me. In the village nobody sleeps outside of their door. Different pov makes a great collage of sleeping in the park.

Not unfamiliar to me either but not in the area where I live. They are mostly in midtown Johannesburg and towards the south. Poor chap! Great collage Harry!

You did the right thing Harry.. Here in our wonderful 'broken Country' (which seems even more broken now), he would have fallen off the bench, a bunch of school kids (who SHOULD have been at school!) aged about 12-14, would have stolen his shoes, watch, wallet (if he had one), spat on him and maybe for got measure, kicked in the head, while filming it on the mobile phones to show their sick pals later.... I hate this broken country.... I remember when you used to leave doors unlocked.. etc! Fine set of pictures mate! Rob

Sad to see. I hate to be too critical of him though many people are in that situation and not always their fault. He does appear to have work clothes and boots on like he had a long day at work so maybe that is a good thing. Great collage.

He does look a lot better than the average street person...if he is one..hope he gets it together...

I'm thinking he looks pretty comfortable!

I see there are handles on the bench to dissuade sleeping there. Looks like he got around that. He's going to have a groove on his face from his glasses. His boots look like military issue. I hope it was just a bad night and he has somewhere to go. Great collage.

You did the right thing Harry. All the way onto the grass would have been better for his back and hips. Nice human interest study. Nobody can complain that in a car collage. :>) Dana

Ah so good to know, you alerted the sheriffs to help him if needed, and yep sometimes it's definitly better to call offical help if available... Hope he god home and well again. And you did a very fine documentation of our times lesser fortunes citizens

Whoa...tough time for this poor guy. Yep...I'd have done what you did but you had the presence of mind to photograph him too. He is sprawled like a ship upon the rocks.
