Description

What’s Gone Before: [Elegant Elegant Lady: “Well John, I see you started without me!” Mysterious Stranger: “Yes. I was hungry, and didn’t know how long it’d be before you came down.” Elegant Elegant Lady: “And who is that young Elegant Lady that I saw you staring at so assiduously when I came in?” Mysterious Stranger: “I don’t know her name, mother, but our paths crossed as I was out for my walk, and I thought then what a memorable face she has! Imagine my surprise when I saw her sitting at the next table for dinner.” Elegant Elegant Lady: “Beware of pretty faces, my Son, as I’ve always said!”] While the anonymous English Gentleman and the Swiss Governess are essaying their initial foray into human eugenics in the Guesthouse’s upstairs bedroom, down in the dining room, a drama of a different type is taking place: Mysterious Stranger: “She was indeed very pretty mother, but not nearly so much as you!” Elegant Elegant Lady: “That’s a lie, but I’m very pleased to hear it! I do hope though that this vacation won’t turn out to be too expensive. –and I do worry about your sister Fanny, I’m not sure that I should have left her behind in that Boarding School, and not able to keep my eye on her. Who knows what mischief she might get up to.” Mysterious Stranger: “Fanny will be fine, Mother, the school has staff and teachers quite well trained to look after her, and to keep her in hand: and besides, it’s best that we not her schooling in mid-term to drag her across the channel here. Besides, you’ve scraped and scrimped for the past nine years, while I worked night and day in that draper’s shop, to earn enough to pay off father’s debts: we deserve this short rest!!” Elegant Elegant Lady: “Aye, that we have, ant that we do, and it’s a grand gesture you’ve made, Johnny Thornton, and I love you all the more for it: I too have a surprise for you.” John Thornton: “And what would that be, mother?” Elegant Elegant Lady: “This,” she says, and produces a document from her reticule. John Thornton: “What is this?” he says, reaching to see the document that she’s holding. Elegant Elegant Lady: “It’s a lease on a warehouse, in Milcote Northern. It’s a bit old, but it’s spacious, and comes with a grand Town House right across from it.” John Thornton: “A lease, on a warehouse and a Town House?! But why Mother, why??” Elegant Elegant Lady: “It’s time for you to cease to be a draper’s assistant, and to assume the role that you were meant to be, that destiny has set out for you: to be among the manufacturers of Millcote, and to be counted among the great men of our country! Your dream of owning and running your own cotton mill is about to be realized, seize the day, my Johnny, seize the day!” John Thornton: “But Mother, surely that will take more capital than anything that we’ve saved!” Elegant Lady: “I have not been idle, my son, while you’ve slaving away twelve to fifteen hours a day in that draper’s shop, I’ve been talking to various individuals. There are a few enterprising individuals willing to put up their money to back us in this venture. The Milcote & Liverpool District Bank is willing to grant a loan, especially after I had a talk with the Squire Rochester of Thornfield Hall.” John Thornton: “Squire Rochester…” Elegant Lady: “Yes, he became quite jovial after I reminded him of the fact that we Thorntons derive our very name from an ancestor who was a retainer there 200 years ago. Your great-great-grandfather, Miles Thornton was given that name when he removed to the village of Milcote. I wasn’t above working on his sense of Patriarchal responsibility towards a former family retainer, even one who’s removed by six generations.”

Continued from NOTES: John Thornton: “but surely he wouldn’t advance me any money on that basis alone….” Elegant Lady: “Of course not, John: it was your character that most impressed him: the way you persevered all those years to pay off your father’s gambling and speculation debts, even after his creditors had long since given up hope of seeing even one farthing of their money. That is what truly decided him in favor of our venture. He said to me, that wild schemers, and men who talk big, can be found on every side, but a man of integrity is worth more than a hundred Grand Estates!” John Thornton: “Whatever integrity I have Mother, I owe it to you! So, how much capital can we count on?” Elegant Lady: Squire Rochester is advancing us £1,000; and after he also agreed to guarantee the loan, the Milcote & Liverpool Bank is advancing another £500, so that’s a total of £1,500! That should be enough to get us started.” John Thornton: “Mercy, yes!!” Just then, the Concierge walks up to their table, carrying a small plate with a message on it, and saying: “Madame, Madame Hanna Thornton?” Elegant Lady: “Yes, I’m Madame Hanna Thornton.” Concierge: “Telegram, Madame Thornton.” Hanna Thornton: (Taking the telegram): “Oh my Lord, that child will be the death of me yet! Just when we need all the capital that we can get, she finds new ways to waste money!” John Thornton: “Why, what happened?” Hanna Thornton: (Fanning herself wit the telegram) “It’s your sister Fanny, she wants to take dancing lessons. She sends us a expensive telegram to request this, using 3 times as many words as would be prudently necessary to convey her desire, -and as if that weren’t bad enough, the lessons themselves will cost us £5 a year!” John Thornton: “Eewwww,” while reaching across the table to see read the telegram himself. “I agree, it is a bit excessive, but Fanny’s young yet, only twelve. She hasn’t yet learned the harsh lessons of frugality…” Hanna Thornton: “Nor will she ever, I seriously suspect! So, what should we do about her extravagance?” John Thornton: (Turning to the Concierge) “Send back this reply please, by telegram please, ‘Start, Approved, stop, signed, John Thornton, stop.’” Hanna Thornton: “Aren’t you compounding the folly John, by both approving of her ridiculous extravagance, and by sending such approval by telegram in reply?” John Thornton: “Mother, she’s going to need dancing lessons anyway, if we ever wish to see her well placed in marriage. And if I sent my approval by letter, she’d have sent us 10 more telegrams, just as expensive, by the time she received it. Believe me, this one telegram is actually a savings. As for paying £5 a year for dance instruction, we can look into finding a cheaper substitute when we get back to England.” Hanna Thornton: “I am truly blessed that at least one on my children appreciates the importance of prudence when conducting one’s affairs.” Reaching across the table to grasp her son’s hand, “I’ve always known that I could rely upon you John, you have never let me down when it comes to either your sense, or your sensibility!” John Thornton: “Yes mother!”
