Description

While John Thornton and his mother Hannah are discussing the future of their Cotton Mill in Milcote-Northern, the anonymous English Gentleman and the Swiss Governess are in the Guesthouse’s upstairs bedroom, and about to embark on their 1st procrational tryst. What’s Gone Before: [The Swiss Governess, Esther Abrabanel, upon opening her bedroom door, sees her paramour for the 1st time: A tall, dark, & handsome stranger: sitting before her fire, and drinking a glass of Claret. "We'll meet together each evening after dinner here in your room." "As you wish," tersely, a pause, and then: "Are we to me-meet this evening?" "Yes." Pause: "We only have three evenings." "When are we to begin?" "I thought you might like a little time to accustom yourself," he replied. "I have accustomed myself, I am ready now." He arose, went to the door, and locked it.] Now, continued from Previous Episode: Turning back from the door, the anonymous English Gentleman said, in his strangely rich mellifluous voice: ‘The glowing of the embers give off more light than one would normally expect, does this fact bother you in any way?’ “No,” said Esther, slowly rising to her feet. Turning towards the man, she suddenly stammered in a noticeably nervous voice: “Before we begin Sir, I want to thank you for choosing me!” “Thank me!!!” said the man, flabbergasted, -”for choosing you!! Why on earth would you want to thank me for what any other woman in your position would consider a debauching degradation???” “Not for myself, Sir,” said Esther, “but for the sake of my father! He was wrongfully imprisoned for another man’s crime, but because of your choice, and the monies that you’ve paid me, he’s now a free man! For that Sir, for the opportunity that you’ve afforded me, I’ll forever be grateful.” “My dear young lady,” he said, crossing the room, and standing closely in front of her. They were so close, they could each feel the heat radiating off each other’s bodies. “-It isn’t you who should be doing the thanking, but I! I should be the one to thank you, -for if all goes well, you are about to give to me the most precious gift that a woman can give a man: a child of his own flesh and blood!” He paused, and then added, “It is however a blessing and a relief to me to know that what I’m about to endeavor isn’t wholly wrapped in sin! -that at least one bit of good has come from my selfish unholy desire!” “Do not say that Sir,” said Esther. She was conscious that his hand was resting right next to hers on the back of the chair; -but a slight movement from her, and they’d be touching for the very 1st time. “Bringing a child into the world is indeed holy thing, -no matter what the circumstances! You and I are about to unite with the creator himself when we strive to bring forth a new life. That is a mighty and wondrous thing we are about to embark upon! -and since a righteous deed has already resulted from it, surely G-d will crown our efforts with success!” “Wouldst that what you say were true, -wouldst that I could truly believe it!” Turning towards the fireplace, she notices the painting for the 1st time on the wall above the fireplace. “Tell me Sir,” she said, “did you by any chance arrange for the decor of this room, or is it all happenstance?”

CONTINUED FROM THE NOTES: “What do you mean?” “That painting Sir!” she says, pointing towards it. She felt his hand rest upon her right hip, sending tremors of anticipation through her belly. With a slight trembling of breath, she continued: “Did you request it, possibly as a way to set a certain ambience for our meetings? -or is it simply serendipity?!” “That painting, the nude lady with the bird? I should say not!! Rather, before you entered, I was thinking to have it removed as I feared that it might cause undue embarrassment!” “Tee-hee-hee” she giggles, showing mirth for the 1st time. “-a nude lady with a bird, -really Sir, I should say not!! That’s Leda & the Swan by Leonardo de-Vinci! It’s a classic masterpiece! Unfortunately, that’s only a copy of a copy, as the original was lost.” “Really,” he said, joining her before the fireplace, and gazed up at the painting. “-it’s not just a lewd picture?” He was suddenly aware of her soft hand resting upon his sleeve. It sent sweet tingles up and down his arm. “No Sir, and if one were a believer in omens, one could consider that a good auspice for own procreation!” “How so?” “It’s a story from Greek mythology, Leda was the wife of Tyndareus, the King of Sparta. The god Zeus desired her, and so while she was bathing in a lake, he appeared before her in the form of a swan in order to seduce her. Later that night, she also lay with her husband: as a result of these two unions, she bore two sets of twins! She bore Helen and Polydeuces to the god Zeus, and Castor and Clytemnestra to her husband Tyndareus.” “Interesting! –but what has it to do with us?” “Why, Sir,” she said, smiling up into his face, “one could say that this painting here is a harbinger of our own future fecundity! Just look at how she’s stroking the swan’s neck, there’s a lot of symbolism in that!” “Ahhhhhhh,” he exhalated dryly, “I can see THAT!” Again she bubbled over with mirth. “Well,” she said, forcing herself to turn away from him, ‘if we are to procreate, we should begin, -before either one of us should lose his nerve.” “Yes!” he nodded in agreement.
