Description
I thought you might like to see the Cornwall rarely viewed by most that vacation here.
This is China Clay, an Imerys company which mines chalk, clay and calcium carbonates. It is also part of what is commonly known as The Clay Trails, a cyclists and horse riders holiday heaven!
A place such as this now houses the Eden Project, 10 minutes walk from my house. A double edged sword, as far as many folk in Cornwall are concerned. As with all things, there are good and bad sides. As a resident, I see the benefits and drawbacks of both.
This is the view I took facing the opposite direction to that posted yesterday. Unbelievable isn't it! Whole swathes of this county looks like this. The run from Saint Austell to Saint Merryn on the North coast looks like the moon. What is left after the clay is removed is shown in the cone shaped mountain on the right hand side of this image. Gorse is just about the only plant hanging on to its steep sides. I do believe Imerys now has been charged with returning the land they mine to it's former glory.
On a positive side, rabbits love this place, and buzzards love rabbits, and there are Vipers! So that is a plus and there are many pockets still untouched - so far. Also, truth be told, men here have jobs! That can never be a bad thing.
For those interested, information can be gleaned from the following site, including why the lake water near the mines is green. ^=^

Thank you for taking the time to look. ^=^

So at last I can picture where exactly you live! As a potter I know all about the many uses of China clay, but I never realised that there were trails here. 10 minutes from the Eden Project, eh? could drive you mad in the summer, but I can see there will be some real advantages too.

Good shot.
