Description
TG2, tree from the planetside file sharing section. Postwork (birds, sharpening, frame and signature) in Picture Publisher.
I've been exercising on terrain displacements here and fiddling with some kind of "foggy" atmo. How comes I'm always getting grainy results when I use backlight? The quality settings here are 36 samples for the atmo and 1.05 for the cloud layer, of which both are quite simple. I think I've read a suggestion by, I guess, Eye of the beholder (if I remember right) to set the atmo to at least 100 samples - if that's the reason, I'd be happy if anyone could let me know. Or is it the cloud layer?
I wish you all a great week, and thanks for all your comments, inspiration and help in the past and future!

beautiful landscape - great atmosphere!

Grainy or not (If you have a small monitor, who cares?) Well done!

Another beautiful image Susanne. The more samples you use for the atmo and cloud, the less grain you will get.The higher sample settings do not seem to significantly affect the rendering times.I normally set the atmosphere quality samples to 100 or more, and the cloud samples to 200 or more. It's just a case of experimenting really to get the result that best suits the image. Playing around with the Haze density and Bluesky additive settings in the Atmosphere tab can also produce some very natural results. Keep up the good work! Paul

Thanks a lot Paul, I'll think of that next time!

Looks super Sue....here is something I read from time to time to remind me of TG2's many settings....its from Oshyan at the planetside forum...I believe he is also known as JavaJones and helped in developing Terragen: partial quote: "If you see noise in your clouds, increase cloud samples. If you see noise in the atmosphere, either below or above the clouds, or in light rays, increase atmosphere quality. For atmosphere samples I wouldn't go above 64 unless you have lots of rays, in which case you might go as high as 128. Don't go above that though as you get diminishing returns for very much longer render times. Cloud samples could be put as high as 256 in some cases, but 128 should be a normal maximum to give good results. Much lower settings should usually be fine, especially for default cloud settings. The taller your clouds (higher "depth"), the more samples will be needed for good quality. For clouds and atmosphere the quality is defined by number of samples and is indicated by the level of noise. If you don't see noise in your clouds or atmosphere but want higher "quality", don't increase samples, just increase Detail in the Renderer. Once you get a good level of noise-free results with clouds and atmosphere at 0.5 detail you can adjust other settings. If your lighting seems to need more detail or accuracy you can try increasing GI detail. I would try 1 level at a time, go from 2 to 3, then 3 to 4 if it's not enough. If you don't see noticeable differences in these changes then your problem probably lies elsewhere!" Keep on!!

Nice work Susanne. Toll was Du aus TG2 alles rausholst. Du kommst scheinbar immer besser mit dem Programm zurecht.
