Description

Forty Four years ago today, I lost one of my best friends. Jeffrey Gordon Tyne 3/28/1945 – 5/29/1966. He was a US Navy corpsman HM3 stationed at Quang Nam, Vietnam. He was only 21 years, 2 months and 1 day old. His position on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall is Panel 07E – Line 123. I miss you Jeff and I always will. This photo was taken August 1983 and scanned today. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial was founded by Jan Scruggs, who served in Vietnam (199th Light Infantry Brigade) as a infantry corporal. The Memorial (wall) was completed November 1, 1982 and dedicated on November 13, 1982. No Federal funds were used. The Memorial (wall) was designed by an undergraduate, at Yale University, Maya Ying Lin, born in Athens, Ohio in 1959. The "Three Servicemen" bronze sculpture, about 150 feet away, is part of this Memorial and it faces the center of the “wall”. An American flag (which is 12' x 18') flies from a 60' pole. The flag flies 24 hours a day – 7 days a week, in honor of the men and women listed on the wall. There are currently 58,261 names on the “wall”. Each of the two walls is 246.75 feet long, composed of 70 separate inscribed granite panels, plus 4 at the end without names; the panels themselves are 40 inches in width. The black granite is from Bangalore, India. On November 11, 1993, the Vietnam Women's Memorial was dedicated. Much of this information came from http://thewall-usa.com. GOD bless the men and women who have served this great nation, currently serve or will serve in the future. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous comments. Dana

What an image and a tribute to friendship as well! Quite touching, and very human in all of the most honest, touching ways. Marvelous and touching. It really holds a significant and undeniable impact.

when I see a memorial, my stomach is queasy from realizing how many soldiers paid the ultimate price. the first military cemetery that I visited was in Manila , Philippines in 1988.it was nerve wracking experience and made me appreciate the soldiers that do serve

So many young lives cut short then as now. Service men, women and their families need our support as they serve and when they come home. Excellent dedication to your friend.
