Description
Betrayed by the Romans. Forced into slavery. Reborn as a Gladiator. The classic tale of the Roman Republic's most infamous rebel. Torn from his homeland and the woman he loves, Spartacus is condemned to the brutal world of the arena where blood and death are primetime entertainment. Sura is the Thracian wife of Spartacus, the seer of her village, who foretells that his departure from home will bring great and unfortunate things upon them. Sura is the embodiment of everything Spartacus fights for. -Spartacus: Blood and Sand Last year when I posted the portrait of Olympias (see below) I mentioned that I have long been swayed by a fascination for portraits of literary characters and persona from ancient history. Over the past few months I have found some pleasurable distraction, as I imagine some you have, in following the cable series based on the history and legend of Spartacus. Critics seem to be having as much fun with the series as viewers. Being an exercise in, and exploration of, dramatic spectacle, Spartacus: Blood and Sand is an easy target to poke at. Fans, for their part, could not seem to care less what detractors have to say. Sensory indulgence is befitting any tale that is set within the society of ancient Rome, and this series indulges its viewers lavishly. Spartacus is a child of contemporary media produced with a dominant emphasis on dynamic visual imagery. After becoming accustomed to the style a few episodes in I began to warm up to the portrayals of the characters. It was not long before I felt an inspiration coming on. ;-) For about a month now I have spent quality coffee break time envisioning and sketching out a series of close up portraits based upon the performances in Spartacus. I have no intention of going after actual physical likenesses of the performers, the time and energy chasing that rabbit is better invested elsewhere. What I am working towards is a tribute, of sorts, to the characterizations brought through by the actors. If you can glimpse some aspect of Sura which Erin Cummings has brought to life than I will feel I've reached the shore I set out for. It was an easy choice to begin the set with Sura as she is the guiding inspirational force which drives Spartacus single-mindedly on to the fulfillment of his destiny. "Spartacus' love for Sura is what keeps him alive. Whether that means that she is there in person to do that or whether she comes to him in a vision or in a dream, she's always behind every decision he makes and every beat of his heart." -Erin Cummings My only hope in posting these is that you may enjoy viewing them as much as I am enjoying creating them. With warm regards, Terry Clicking on the image below will take you to the portrait of Olympias

What a fantastic expression you have produced here. She expresses both Sadness and Despair in her eyes, yet Stoicism in the set of her mouth and jaw. This deserves to be on a wall in hard copy!!! Renderosity limits me to 5 stars, otherwise it would be more!

fantastic!

She is lovely but her expression is hard to decipher. Plutarch, writing about Spartacus, says that his wife was taken prisoner with him. It does not say what happened to her.

The Wyz: "She is lovely but her expression is hard to decipher." 'Sounds like something Spartacus would say about her. ;-) At least as we see him in this portrayal. & "Plutarch, writing about Spartacus, says that his wife was taken prisoner with him. It does not say what happened to her." Yes, Plutarch is one of the primary sources for what we accept historically about Spartacus. This series follows Plutarch for the first half, showing Sura captured with Spartacus but takes dramatic liberty with the history we do not know. I'll leave off from further details, as there are some of you who have yet to see the series. Spartacus runs on the Starz network, but is also viewable via Netflix and there is a dvd set of the first season due out before long. For more information about the series including character profiles take a peek over at Starz.com T.

I didn't know about the series, so I have not seen it. Your description however, is very informative. I always enjoy your historical characters, and Sura does not disappoint. I think her eyes the most beautiful. She looks beautiful, strong, brave and wise. Wonderful mood with the lighting and background. Exceptional work. Bravo!!
