Description
No matter how slow the film, Spirit always stands still long enough for the photographer it has chosen. -Minor White Sometimes I feel that I have wasted a whole day trying one tactic after another to make my tools work, to make a single paragraph come out, to play a single authentic-sounding musical stroke. At a later time, the problem solves itself easily. Feeling like a fool, feeling obsessed with something that can't turn out, is simply a stage in solving the problem. Creative despair feels rotten when it overtakes us, but it is necessary ... it is a symptom that we are throwing our whole being into the problem. When you have lived with a creative problem for a while, you begin to see it and label it a problem. It is no longer fresh. Then you're stuck with it; the problem ties you up in knots. It becomes a vicious circle. Any attempt to force the situation causes it to rigidify further. But if you put the whole project aside and try something new, you don't know of any problem. You can do the new project without thinking of your problem. Mysteriously you find that there are ways of working out even the most heartbreakingly knotty enigmas when you are not constantly on top of them. La siesta, mindfully employed and gainfully enjoyed, can be a powerful instrument of spiritual awakening. -Stephen Nachmanovitch

very well done! And the Nachmanovitch quote accurately describes my struggles with a couple of my ideas, so I started at something else for now, hoping I'll find the right way later on. But that's just what it's all about, isn't it?

Redhead, mmmm. And that no BS look is wonderful. There is an old Buddhist tale about the monkey and the fruit. The monkey sees the fruit at the bottom of a jar. He reaches in and grabs it but cannot remove his hand as long as he holds the fruit. By letting go and upending the jar he receives his reward. Mr. Nachmanovitch reminded me of that story. By letting go of the problem for a while and returning to it with new eyes you receive your reward.
