Description
Captured 5/10/10, at beautiful Legg Lake in the beautiful Whittier Narrows Recreation Area, in not-so-beautiful South El Monte, California.
Much better viewed full size.
There are many ducks, geese and pigeons at this facility, but this was the only heron/egret I encountered while circumventing the large lake.
To avoid it becoming my perpetual hide and seek nemesis, I used every ninja trick in the book to snap the waterfowl, employing full lens zoom, before it detected my presence and fled, rapidly soaring off into the great beyond.
--------------
The herons are wading birds in the Ardeidae family. There are 64 recognized species in this family. Some are called egrets or bitterns, instead of herons. Within the family, all members of the genera Botaurus and Ixobrychus are referred to as bitterns, and including the Zigzag Heron or Zigzag Bittern are a monophyletic group within the Ardeidae. However, egrets are not a biologically distinct group from the herons, and tend to be named differently because they are mainly white and/or have decorative plumes. Although egrets have the same build as the larger herons, they tend to be smaller.
The classification of the individual heron/egret species is fraught with difficulty, and there is still no clear consensus about the correct placement of many species into either of the two major genera, Ardea and Egretta. Similarly, the relationship of the genera in the family is not completely resolved.

I have not seen one like this before, such a lovely animal.. Great photos, I am glad you were able to get him before he became aware of you, they certainly are camera shy.

Beautiful capture of what I think is a Snowy Egret.

I'm with morningglory. There are "white Herons" but they have yellow legs and yellow bills. Great White Egrets have black legs and feet but yellow bills. The Snowy Egret has yellow feet and black bills & legs. The Snowy Egret also has neck plumes of feathers that you can see, since they are wet, hanging just in front of his legs. Oh, beautiful photos in this fantastic collage. Dana
