Description

I sent Andrea a PS painting for her birthday 'cause I didn't know if I'd be here. BUT! Surprise Andrea---I'm posting! (I've celebrated birthdays in email this year, but today I go public!) Ok! THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is my version of Andrea's OCEAN: It's my private ocean---Lake Michigan, right after a foggy sunrise. Why for Andrea? 'Cause she loves the ocean, 'cause she loves nature, 'cause she's one of the masters on this site, 'cause she's posted "doodles" that make my serious drawings look lame, 'cause she's influenced a whole lot of us to try things we never tried and get better & better all the time. 'Cause she's taught for years, and oh what I'd do to be in her class (!), 'cause she's got a wonderful sense of humor, both in her art and in her person, 'cause she does serious to wildly playful drawings & paintings, to the most beautiful church tapestries I've ever seen (if you've never seen them, check 'm out, they're not to be missed!), to her terrific photo-manipulations & garden & insect & flower shots, etc, to her one-of-a-kind sculptures---which have got to be the best sculptures since Michelangelo. (You listening, Mich?) And she's braved art shows & tackled the market when many of us needed a shot of adrenalin just to think about selling. And 'cause she's always spreading her wonderful & witty spirit everyday without fail. Is that "dawny" enough for ya? I speak for all of us when I say that you, Andrea, are the best! I wish you tons more happy birthdays & may your boundless spirit just blast on, inspiring & motivating & delighting us all for years to come. We all love you, Andrea! Happy birthday from one of your greatest admirers, Mark
See full size, or your computer will explode... (was that subtle, or what?) (I've almost gotten to everyone's gallery this week! Hurrah!!! Have a great day, all!)

What a blush-making speech, Mark! Gosh, how embarrassing, it's a good thing we don't yet have compulsory 2-way web cams! It is a most beautiful pic, that sea looks as though it's made of something that is about to become solid any minute! I moved my banner pics to Flickr, by the way, but the montage of the whole set is still here! Thankyou so much, Mark!

Mark this is such a wonderful birthday dedi to your friend, and it really served to brighten my morning. She must really be a special lady, as your glowing words really made the point so well. She is lucky to have such a caring friend like you, who would come up with this mini-ocean idea just for her. By the way it really is a beautiful photo and I'm sure will provide her with smiles today.

All that comes to mind as I view your starkly fine, dawn, lake photo is, "Red sky at night, sailors delight; red sky in the morning, sailors take warning." And my dawn brain isn't able to make any sense of how I might tie that into Andrea having a great day today. Staring some more at your image...I now see liquid mercury...you know the silvery liquid stuff in analog thermometers. Hmmmmmm, do they still even make those anymore? All speculation aside, this is one eye-catching photo that I know Andrea is loving already. HB to A! :-)

Wow, Mark, you gave Andrea one of the most gorgeous birthday gifts ever!! And your speech, well, I know we've all raised our glasses and toasted her with cheers and hurrahs; it was THAT good. It's also that true; she IS that person and we're all lucky to know her. Happy Birthday again, Andrea!!!

Stark magnificence in this stunning composition, Mark, dedicated to Andrea, our doyenne on things arty, on her birthday. She got me started on headlights and taillights. Say, not to demean this spectacular effort, but on second glance, this image looks like an ocean of root beer.

Takes my breath away Mark, and I am quite certain that Andrea loved it! Wonderful color and mood, I of course love the reflections and the feel of solitude. Anyone who doesn't know Andrea is missing out on such a fine artist and human. Her works inspire me and I wish I could do as she does. Lol @ Harry, I was thinking hot chocolate:-) Beautiful Mark!!

You know, geologically-speaking, Lake Michigan is actually an inland sea--not a whompin' big one like Lake Superior, but heck, big enough. And you've captured that inherent "sea-ness" here, especially with the contrasts and the post-sunrise coloration that always strikes me as distinct to Lake Michigan. I'm sure that the sun rises in exactly the same way over other lakes and seas, but there's something about that long, skinny body of water just barely touching Illinois that will always draw my attention. Maybe it's because of childhood memories of "discovering" chrinoids and trilobites in the sand. I love the rich textures of light and shadow and the perfect capture of the undulating water! The sun is in exactly the right position to reveal itself only in reflections and in the light that it casts off, but it's not in view and it's not glaring just at the edge of the frame either. This whole image looks so open! As always, this is marvelous work and a perfect dedication to one of the perfect artists here! This is incredibly touching. I love it!

You have said everything there is to say about Andrea .. I can't think of a thing to add. And I would just love to be in one of her classes too!! Wouldn't you love to have her as your next door neighbor? And such a perfect image for Durleybeachbum!! I absolutey love that liquid yet almost solid feel to the water! Your photography is as smashing as your paintings!
