Description
This was another of the wonderful creatures we enjoyed while camping...a Loon. They are such beautiful birds, even though they are only black and white. If you have never heard the call of a loon, it is one of the most haunting sounds you have probably ever heard. We heard them during the night, the one on our smaller lake calling to one on up larger, upper lake. They feed on small fish and crayfish.
Another interesting fact about loons is that once they hatch they never return to land. Their legs are too weak to support them. When they nest they make mats of grass and vegetation that floats on the water. For a little while after they hatch the babies will ride on the back of one of the parents' backs. Remarkable birds!

You know, with just a bit of a blur and some grainyness added, this could pass for that famous picture of the Loch Ness monster. Beautiful picture Holly.

Love these birds! It was fun seeing and hearing them again this trip. If anyone wants to hear what the sound like you can do a web search for loon sounds and listen to their calls Nice shot Hon.

Wonderful shot Holly. I can remember falling a sleep listening to them while we were camping. We use to look foward to it each night.

It is a joy to see this picture. He looks well fed, he is almost sinking in the water. This species is known as a Diver, in europe. This is the Great Northern Diver to us and is very rare in the UK. I have never seen one and I am a very keen bird watcher, it's on my maybe once in a lifetime list. You are lucky to see them so close. I have seen it's relative the Red Throated Diver but only once.

I have heard the Loon calls, and I agree they are haunting. My most favoured bird sound this side of the Atlantic is the haunting call of the Buzzard, a beautiful hawk. The information you provide with the image is really interesting. Thank you for posting this. ^=^
