Description

This was another of the wonderful creatures we enjoyed while camping...a Loon. They are such beautiful birds, even though they are only black and white. If you have never heard the call of a loon, it is one of the most haunting sounds you have probably ever heard. We heard them during the night, the one on our smaller lake calling to one on up larger, upper lake. They feed on small fish and crayfish. Another interesting fact about loons is that once they hatch they never return to land. Their legs are too weak to support them. When they nest they make mats of grass and vegetation that floats on the water. For a little while after they hatch the babies will ride on the back of one of the parents' backs. Remarkable birds!
