"I can and I will win through. There is no loss or defeat which holds a final influence upon my destiny. So long as I am breathing ... I can win. There is always the chance to triumph. Stand up! Fight on!"Spartacus ... an historical archetype of winning through against adversity beyond all reasonable hope; even if only for a brief, shining time. It would seem he still radiates something of that power, even as an inspiring spirit for this portrait. The work above is a variation of the portrayal I posted a few days ago. This image has generated more responses, both in the gallery and by mail, than any other work I have shown at Ren'. This is all the more impressive as the portrait has been viewed less than one hundred times. Motivated by this vibrant interest I returned to the original and worked on bringing through other aspects that I had seen during the development process. The strongest influence for creating this variation, however, was Lorie's (magickmedbh) statement that the question which called this persona out of the shadows of history deserved to be the title of its own portrait. The opening words are a sincere gift. May they be of some inspiration to you .. and may you win through to your own heart's dearest dreams! With warm regard, TerryWherever hope dies, fear flourishes, and so doing hampers the spirit. Wherever hope lives, fear can not thrive, One is never completely wrecked. Wherever hope flourishes, fear dies out, leaving us the better equipped, the happier and the stronger to deal with what we must. Fear depends upon thoughts to feed it; cut these off. For want of dark thoughts your fears will starve and die. You can and you will make good in life! You can and you will win through!

Wouldn't want to meet him in a dark ally. Your words remined me of a scene from the movie version of the book 'Exodus'. The ship Exodus has tried to run a British blockade and deliver refugees to Palestine. The ship has been surrounded by British naval vessels and the leaders are arguing over what to do. A little old man pushes his way into the circle of quarreling people and shouts "Don't beg, fight! Fight!!" There was a saying among the Jews fighting the Nazis in the Warsaw Ghetto, "Better to die in blood than live in shit!"

The Wyz: "Wouldn't want to meet him in a dark ally." I confess, I had trepidations meeting with him in a brightly lit studio. ;-) "Better to die in blood than live in shit!" You could put those words on the lips of Spartacus and they would ring true in a current movie or a historic retelling. And yet, this quality of defiant spirit expresses through countless gradations. One can stand up and fight for common justice and/or basic integrity in the quality of life and be as strong and triumphant as any figure in history. The character of Tom Joad from John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath comes to mind in this respect. He was portrayed powerfully by Henry Fonda in the film adaption and paraphrased in these lines by Bruce Springsteen:

Your portrait is perfect for an hero. And Spartacus for sure was an hero of "dark" times where history could only be written with the blood of thousands men. Think what could be an ancient battle like Canne (Hannibal Vs. Rome) with 25.000 dead men in only one day! Battles with Spartacus were less important but not less bloody and really Spartacus seem invincible till the end, when risked also to succeeed escaping in Grece...Again congrats for your work!!!

Well, you know I love the character morph, and this texture really brings him to life! Why is it people often mistake kindness and consideration a weakness? Those people who can show compassion are often the ones when pushed, fight back the hardest! Well done... ;D

The previous portrait was good but this one is pure dynamite. Indeed this is a face that would bring fear to the oppressors, where men would be saying OH shit and wishing they hadn't crossed this guy... and those were the last thoughts that ever went through their minds.
