Description

Again, over the course of the discussion about whether Carrara was capable of producing a realistic render equivalent to what Poser or Studio could do, the challenge was issued, what's the best you can do with only 15 minutes of setup time to load your V4/M4, texture, pose, add expression, move the camera and adjust lights. Here's what I came up with, though I took a little longer than 15 min because I kept fiddling with the beowulf shirt and trying to get the 'shoulder pad' look to go away (couldn't figure it out so I zoomed in to make it less noticeable and hit render). What do you guys think? And how could I have improved this? Used BetterThanLife's Jeremy shaders for the character, dialed into a face by twiddling with the M4 morphs, and used Dynamic Rebel Hair (I didn't style it at all, though, but next time I think I would spent a minute or two in the hair room to brush it just ever so slightly). This was a fun little self challenge, and since I cheated and went slightly over 15 minutes, I think I'm going to try again :) Edit: humph, don't know why this render is showing up in the gallery and my previous one isn't. To recap so that my description makes more sense, there was a discussion over in the Carrara forums at daz where a newcomer to Poser postulated that Carrara couldn't produce renders of poser people nearly as well as either Poser or Daz Studio could because of inherent limitations within Carrara and based on galleries that person had seen (though I don't know what galleries he was browsing as I've seen some pretty fantastic renders here). It wasn't a flamewar or anything and no one got heated, but I disagreed and thought I would give a shot at seeing how well I could do using Carrara 8 pro, even though I'm pretty much a beginner; any helpful criticisms or tips to improve would be much welcomed).

I would spend hours on a render like this in DAZ and don't know that it would turn out any better! I think you met the challenge! Excellent render!

Very very well done. I would fail at this as i spend waaaaaaayy too much time on cllothing posing etc etc etc.. and i doubt i could get anything near as good.

Thanks guys :) I appreciate it. Still learning how to do this stuff and playing in the texture room to try to find the right look for skin, and especially having difficulty making the eyes look right, but with the feedback I feel encouraged that I'm on the right track.

Excellent rendering-I think you've gotten that challenge (barring the time!) down. I love using Carrara, though only have 6 Pro-and I've seen some amazing results out of that app. Kudos, and keep going with it! Hopefully someday I'll get 8. :) I use a water shader, clean, clear and with no bump/displacement for the tears-you can find the base shaders in the Carrara files, and there may be a few freebies around that can help. The eyesurface may have a bit of AO attached to it, you can fiddle with those in your shader room and see if the bump can be upped a tad, and the reflective surfaces as well-without a reflection map and see how that goes? Most of the time, it's fiddling with each portion of the model - one at a time- that works. I try to eliminate all reflections on the cornea, iris and eyewhite in Daz when I fiddle with the eyesurface since there's no point in doubling the shading. Haven't tried that in Carrara though. Hm.

Wow, excellent suggestions, DarwinsMishap. I've raced straight off to my texture room and am trying several different things now. Thanks! :)

Only 15 min? Wow, fantastic render and detailed texture work, regardless of setup time.
