Description

(A very wide shot: Best full-size.) A very foggy morning in Chicago. May, 2010. * * * Thank you for your terrific responses to my horrific macro, lol. (I even forgive those of you who fav'd it!) Have a wonderful weekend, Mark

Oooh, this is quite marvelous! I remember the foggy May we've had; in fact, I've seen more fog this spring than I have in a long time (in Chicago that is. Prague and Cesky Krumlov have their own fog factories working overtime it seems.) I love the twilight blue that this image holds so richly, and the panoramic perspective is absolutely perfect. The fog, though apparently indistinct, has a very definite shape to it, as if it's contained by a semi-permeable membrane. I like that because the fog takes on an almost living quality, like a vaporous amoeba, slowly enveloping the city. This is quite marvelous work, as always.

I'm traveling backwards in (your) time, so I'm not sure what your horrific macro is about (yet), but this photo is anything but horrific.... wonderfully atmospheric, dreamy, yet firmly grounded in the reality of city life. The composition is really powerful, simultaneously zooming in and out across the cityscape, the trees and the water, with the lights providing punctuated code accentuating the marvelous sweep. Fantastic!!!

Wonderful! Wonderful! I love the curve of the fog, following the line of the lights and then the treeline! There is a beautiful section between the lights and trees, and the heavy fog where misty shapes tantalize. In the slight irregularity of the fog, my imagination see intent, as the fog rushes to blanket the area totally in its grasp. The walking figures are in shades of black and red, fading into the trees or mimicking the lights, an integral part of the scene. There is so much to see here, an overall atmosphere and wonderful details. The lights against the trees seem to make faces. The dark trees change to a lighter green at the edges, which circles around to a hint of tint behind the distant lights. Car Lights and streetlights are like sparkling jewels against the blues, greens and blacks. I'm just rambling a bit now, but each time I look something else jumps out at me. (Like a newspaper John Prine read in Italy. The only one in English with all the news in the world crammed in to 4 pages.) There is a wealth images in this one image too. This is beautiful, Mark! I love it!

How did Carl Sandburg's poem go? The fog comes on little cat feet. It sits looking over harbor and city on silent haunches and then moves on. He must've seen this scene .. and been inspired! What a breathtaking view. I love fog. It so softly blankets everything, and softens even the ugliest view. But this view is gorgeous no matter what the weather or time of day.
