Not a Corn snake, my book has that one and it has different marking and is not known as a water snake. Actaully after this shot it looked right at me and then turned and took off like a shot. LOL! They are afraid of me, of maybe the eagle on the t-shirt I was wearing that day. ;D

Really nice image. Those snakes can move through the water pretty quickly. Excellent capture!

We used to call them water rattlers where I lived. I can't be sure because I'm not sure of the size but in water, the colors become exaggerated... my 2 guesses are either a young cottonmouth or a copperhead. Both have similar colors but the cottonmouth comes closer as a juvenile. In any event, either will try to avoid people. We were told last weekend that the rattlesnakes were out in our campgrounds, stayed out of camp sites pretty much, but were definitely out in the grassy areas. The ranger said they would not rattle at us if we got too close because they had a learned behavior that if they rattled, a human would kill them and so they just tried to be still and quiet when one walked near. Scary thought!

Well, I consulted MY book and it says BIG snake....RUN!!!! LOL. Have seen this sight quite often where we camp...and the adult northern water snakes look a lot like this. However, I DID get to see something I have never seen in real life before...a snake eating a perch. It was pretty fascinating!

I'm with Holly and she better run fast because I can still move pretty fast. Super shot Kim and a very clear lookat the face in ZOOM mode. Dana

not a water moccasin? we had plenty where I lived as child and they would come up to our yard during flooding.when I was in college my mother heard a noise in the cabinet and she called a neighbor with a gun and he shot it.they said it was about six feet long.excellent shot for sure

I don't know what he is, just run!!! He looks like he's headed right for you and he looks big! He really looks beautiful though against that blue water. Superb shot. You're really brave.
