Description

Measure said over the Nunera link to Neblae,"The other conductor said his name here was Hermes B Dover. I'm off to lunch, now!I'm starving." Narchi nodded and asked,"Are ye going to keep us much longer?" Detective Edward McCartney said,"I'm not holding the train. Soon as the carpenters get a new door put on, we're off to Inverness!" Narchi asked,"We? You're coming along?" Eddy said,"Aye, that I am. It's still an ongoing investigation, what with one man dead and the new Conductor missing. I hate to say that no one saw what happened to him, other than seeing him fall into the Don River." Narchi sighed. "Fine. I told you all I know. I don't know what Hermes was involved in, just he owed me money once and I had forgotten all about it. The witnesses back that up. I wasn't cursing at him, just wanting him to stop. He told me on that coal car that someone was on the train to kill him and thought I was it. He saw the stranger and jumped off the train. Watching Hermes fall into the river, I slipped and fell, almost knocking meself out on the railing." Cyrus said,"That was Mrs Mardalan and I broke down the door and jumped out. I saw the man over Archie here with a knife. Mrs Mardalan used some kind of spring-cocked knife to launch it's blade into the man's back. He whipped around and pulled a derringer on the little lady. I did my manly duty and took the bullet and blew his head off. She helped the Professor back in and she sewed me AND my shirt up! She did a right professional job, too!" Detective McCartney said,"There was no lock on the door. How was it locked?" Narchi as Archie answered,"I have a theory. He knew he didn't want any witnesses to his murderous dealings, and must have used a wedge to seal the door up. Most people couldn't tell much through a little window. Since the bounder tried to kill ME and my WIFE...Might I have a look in his bag? I'd like to know WHY he was so keen to kill me in addition to my friend, who I hadn't seen in an age." Eddy nodded. "It's irregular, but this whole situation is HIGHLY irregular. I'd like to handle this all on the QT. This happened on a GNSR line and I would like to wrap this all up tidily before this gets reported to Scotland Yard! Let me get it." Narchi thanked him. He left for a moment as some carpenters came by and took some measurements and left. Cyrus said,"That was impressive work. No doctor in the Union army EVER worked so quickly and surely! Are you some kind of lady doctor or such? Neblae laughed. "I just have a healing touch. Since I can sew curtains, an arm isn't much different!" Cyrus blinked,"DANG! Puts the doctors in their place, I reckon!" The Detective came back and put the valise onto Neblae's 'Doctor' bag and snapped the locks with a small tool. Narchi exclaimed,"What the fu--OOLERY is this stuff?" They looked at what seemed a sales sample kit with tooth-brushes, straight razors, toenail clippers and such like. Narchi shook his head. "It's too shallow. It must have a false bottom." He probed around and there was a click. The inside swung up. Inside THAT was something different. Sticks of Dynamite, a sawed-off shotgun,lock-picks,a passport and news-paper clippings. Eddy grimaced,"An anarchist's tool kit! So much for tidy!" Narchi looked at the passport. "Hmm, Timothy Tisdale! Says he's a native to 'Malta'! Isn't that some little island in the Mediterranean? Looks like he's been to the Netherlands and Chile within the past two years!" He looked significantly at Neblea who looked aghast. Eddy looked at the clipping and exclaimed,"Dragons in Chile? Angels in the Netherlands? Looks like he was heading to the Ness River near Inverness to look for the River Monster up there! The man was a crazed anarchist MADMAN! Why would ANYONE in their right mind seek out such fantasy things?" Narchi shrugged."To know things. To ascertain the truth of them. That's what I'm doing heading to Ness." --To be continued!--

Very nice. And now that the detective seems satisfied, Narchi and company will have to figure out the real reasons...! And Neblae's line reminds me of when my father hurt his finger in a chainsaw accident. The first thing my mother said when my father came in with a bloody finger is "You are not going to sew this up yourself - I'll drive you to the doctor's." (True story - my father might very well have done it.)

This is getting thicker than real Maple Syrup in winter. It is amazing how interwoven you can make these story threads and then at some point bring it all together, then split them up again. Do you ever sleep, thinking all this up?? (LOL)

Enter the detective. Is he going to be a foil for Narchi's quick wit, happy to grab on to convenient answers or inconveniently and persistently nosy. So far, he seems the first, but anarchists were a major concern at the time. So Hermoz was a new conductor. Was he on the train because Tilsdale was on it, vice-versa, or were they both on the same trail. From Hermoz' previous comments, he's already had personal contact with River Ness and so seems to have been one step ahead of Tilsdale. Did they get there following the same clues? Tilsdale is dead, did he have other operatives in the area or will more be sent? How quickly will his superiors know that something is a bit amiss with him? Do they have instantaneous communication? The star seems to be the only thing he had that was not of period unless there are more items on his body. Was it more than a weapon, perhaps also a communication device. What happens now that it is off in the bushes somewhere. Any chance the authorities (the Earth ones) will find the body of Tilsdale? Nice cover up stories by Narchi. Interesting that Tilsdale's cover was as a traveling salesman. That's a great way to travel, and be a busybody as they are reputed to be quite gregarious and nosy. He had certainly been around! "Angels in the Netherlands?" Is that new or has my memory done a flit again? I wonder how many more operatives from the Scarlet Army and other entities are littered around Scotland, Chili and the Netherlands and whether they are long time observers or recent arrivals. Excellent image! Wonderful shadows, composition, poses and expressions! I like Neblae's expression as she watches Cyrus. He's a bit of a goof, but lovable in his own way and definitely handy to have around. Very nice job on the detective! I like his expression and pose, and the way the sun stripes a shadow across him and make a wonderful silhouette of him on the wall.

I find it truely unteresting that he had no 'alien' artefacts within his case. Who is the Scarlet army? Nice cover story Narchi came up with! A crazed anarchist madman huh, LOL! The plot thickens and thickens and thickens. Wonder what Aldus thinks of all this? Or the new passengers on the Nautalus?
