Uses

• In lotus, the flowers, seeds, young leaves and rhizomes are all edible. In Asia, the petals are eaten while the leaves are often used as a dish for food. The rhizome (pning in Chinese, Ngau in Cantonese, well, in India and Pakistan, and renkon in Japanese) are used to flavor a soup or fried. The petals, leaves and rhizomes can be eaten raw but also the risk of transmission of parasites, recommends a drink cooked.
• In China every year is celebrated in autumn the moon and the day of moon cakes, which eats and gives the traditional moon cake, made with lotus seed paste and salted duck egg yolks.
The Chinese people believes that the lotus is a very healthy food and why it is known and famous for centuries. Recent studies have confirmed this and showed that it is rich in fiber, vitamin C, potassium, thiamine, riboflavin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, copper and manganese and contains little fat.
• The seeds are eaten together with a herb called Lianhua cha or particularly in Vietnam, the dried stamens are used to prepare a fragrant tea. The seeds of the lotus consist of peanuts (called Lianza, 莲子, or xian Lianza, 鲜 莲子 in Chinese) and are equally versatile, and can be eaten fresh, dried or cooked like popcorn, it can also obtain a paste used in pastry for the preparation of sweets, or boiled and covered with sugar for the preparation of a tong sui (sweet soup).

Symbolism and curiosity
The seven main chakras of Indian tradition, depicted as lotus flowers
The Indian Lotus Nelumbo nucifera is the flower sacred to Hinduism and Buddhism. It is also known as blue lotus, lily or sacred bean of India. It is the national flower of India and Vietnam. The Lotus has everything a complex and ancient philosophical and religious symbolism, including the best known is the representation of subtle energy centers in the human body, called chakras. It is considered a symbol of purity, and this is probably due to the so-called lotus effect, which is the ability, observed precisely in the lotus flowers, of a material to keep themselves clean.
