Description

Dead Horse Point State Park, at the horseshoe turn, is a Utah state park adjacent to Canyonlands National Park and Arches National Park near Moab, Utah. It features a dramatic overlook of the Colorado River. The park is so named because of its use as a natural corral by cowboys in the 19th century. The "dead horse" part of the name is that the corral was abandoned, but the horses did not leave the corral, even after the gate was left open, and died there. The plateau is surrounded by sheer cliffs two thousand feet high, with only a narrow neck of land (30 yards wide) connecting the mesa to the main plateau. Thus it was easy for cowboys to simply fence off this narrow neck, and keep rounded up wild horses from running away. The area was also used in the final scene of the 1991 film Thelma & Louise. A fantastic area to spend a week BUT there is no bug spray or ointment, on the face of the earth, that will protect you, if you sleep there over night. Don’t forget to ZOOM! Information from Wikipedia. Photo taken Spring 1996 with a film camera and recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Excellent clarity, color, textures and stark lighting in this wonderful display of striated cliffs and gullies, Dana!

Stunning and somewhat alien! I think a rather bad science fiction movie in the 1980s was filmed near here too. Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone is the name of the movie in question--Molly Ringwald's first movie, and one of those Grade-B bombs that just forces you to watch it. Anyway...enough rambling. What a shot and the information is quite intriguing as well...the name is evocative in and of itself, and the details in this photo are amazing!
