Description

Dear Jocko, remembering our Scotland trip 2009? Here is a special offer for you: THE BIRTH PLACE OF ROB ROY !! One of my special interests in Scotland are the historical places - and the story of Robert "Roy" MacGregor was such a magnificent story. We visited his grave last year, but I didn`t know where the story began...... The story began HERE, in this lonely house at the western end of Loch Katrine..... where a man named Robert MacGregor was born at 7th March 1671 as son of Donald MacGregor and Margaret Campbell. It is a very lonely place, till today, and that could be the reason that we couldn`t find a place named "Glengyle" at our last year vacation. After our journey I tried to find Glengyle through intense i-net recherche and other sources, and we noticed that we were nearby.... The house is situated directly at the western end of lake Katrine, where the small river Gyle, coming down the Gyle valley, send its water into the lake. In scottish gaelic the Gyle valley is called "glen gyle" = Glengyle How to reach this place? Nearest point for tourists is a location named "The Pier", a fine little tearoom and restaurant and one of two piers for the only passengership on the lake, the "HMS Sir Walter Scott". The Pier is located in a small village named Stronachlachar (or so, I hope it is right, hihi...)They have some little guesthouses hre and some bed & breakfasts. Asking for the Rob Roy house, the Pier`s landlord said "at the hook", that means the extreme western end of Loch Katrine, were the small single track road leads in a sharp curve to the opposite side of the lake - and there is the house, a single house, very lonely. There is no village, only two or three other houses at the opposite shore, one mile from another. Cardriving is forbidden here, because Loch Katrine is the drinking water reservoir for Glasgow and the ground is mainly owned by "Scottish Water" today. I thought about ten minutes to reach the Rob Roy house from "The Pier", but is was much longer than one hour, nearly 4 miles, and the sun burned I could never imagine in Scotland. At the end my head and my armes were burnt by the sun - but it was a lovely place! Hope you enjoy it! Tomorrow I will show the house directly. Dear friends, I hope you enjoy this pic as I enjoyed to walk for it. Please feel free to send comments, all are welcome. Till later, billcody.
