Description

Dear friends, sorry, a lot of days passed since my last pic..... This pic here is once again dedicated to Jocko500, once again it shows the place where Robert MacGregor was born and where he lived for some time of his adventurous life. But: This should not be the house of his birth, only the place. The house here was built in 1707, Rob Roy was born 1671. In this time the clan was proscripted, the name "MacGregor" was forbidden and the MacGregors were tenants of the clan Buchanan, situated at the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. Rob Roy`s certificate of baptism in Buchanan parish church show Glen Gyle as his birthplace, this place here or nearby, but not this house. I have read somewhere, that he was the builder and/or owner of that house. In my last pic I wrote "a small house", but in his time this house was very respectable. And the place is strategic important; it is a triangle between both sides of Loch Katrine and the Gyle valley. Everbody from both sides of the lake and the valley had to pass by here - under the eyes of the clan chief... "The house stands assertively at the head of Loch Katrine, visible for miles along the south shore. The Glengyle MacGregors were asserting their presence and importance in the landscape with this bold architectural statement. The house is not deep and the ceilings are low. The western block was added in the 19th century and the westernmost extension after 1918. This small property, extending to about 2200 acres, is situated at the extreme west end of Loch Katrine. The Loch for rather more than a quarter of a mile and the Glengyle water for another two and a half miles form its southern boundary. To the north the property is separated from the Braes of Balquhidder by the hill tops, which rise to a height of over two thousand feet. The dwelling house, a two storied building with attic or storm windows above, is pleasantly situated facing towards the south, and overlooks the west end of Loch Katrine. It is sheltered from the west and north by a strip of trees, in which there is a small burying ground. In front of the house is a grassy field, which slopes gently to the level of the loch." from: www.Incallander.co.uk/rob roy In the last few decades the house was owned by the Scottish watercrafts; at last there lived three families of water workers inside the house. In a bad condition, the house was sold in 1994 in Glasgow to a private owner. The Scottish National Party and the Scottish National Trust were very angry about this act; meanwhile the house was sold again; it is freshly painted and the plan is to build a small hotel or bed & breakfast. In the wood behind the house is a little old burial place of the MacGregors. There are actually some reconstruction works, and it seem they build a second small house nearby. Sorry, Jocko, there is a website with a complete story and a room plan from this house, but I cannot find it in the moment.... Friends, it is pure fun to do work like this; Your comments for my last pics were great and I was very happy! Thanks for all! I will be back later in the evening. billcody
