Description
I was inspired by this huge room and the huge body parts of the emperor to make an image in the style of metaphysical painter de Chirico.
The new grand glass hall built inside Palazzo dei Conservatori one of the three palaces that make up the Capitoline Museums in Rome today contains the equestrian statue of Marc Aurelius (not here), together with some of the major Capitoline bronzes, that is the Hercules in gilded bronze (in the background) and the remains of the bronze colossus of Constantine. Designed by the architect Carlo Aymonino, it is a prestigious piece of modern architecture within the ambit of this Municipal museum complex and is the fulcrum that links the historic part of Palazzo dei Conservatori to those parts of the museum that have been more recently constructed. Like the colossal marble head of emperor Constantine outside, this colossal bronze head is what remains of a larger statue (head cm 177 hand and globe cm 155) and dates 4th century AD. Like the marble head, it is both a portrait with some recognizable realistic traits as well as an abstract portrait of imperial power. Even if Constantine declared Christianity the official religion to defeat his opponents, he converted only in his deathbed to it.
Metaphysical art (Pittura metafisica) was an Italian art movement, created by Giorgio de Chirico and Carlo Carrà between 1917 and 1920. Their dream-like paintings of squares typical of idealized Italian cities, as well as apparently casual juxtapositions of objects, represented a visionary world which engaged most immediately with the unconscious mind, beyond physical reality, hence the name. Mystery is the most familiar word of de Chirico. He wrote that there is much more mystery in the shadow of a man walking on a sunny day, than in all religions of the world. De Chirico won praise for his work almost immediately from writer Guillaume Apollinaire, who helped to introduce his work to the later Surrealists. Other artists who acknowledged De Chirico's influence include Max Ernst, Salvador Dalì, Giorgio Morandi, René Magritte, and Philip Guston. Several of Sylvia Plath's poems are influenced by De Chirico. Fumito Ueda's critically acclaimed PlayStation 2 game Ico (and its sequel, Shadow of the Colossus) was strongly influenced by De Chirico. Ico features children wandering though huge, ancient and otherwise uninhabited buildings, predominately yellow and green in color.
