Description

The next few days are supposed to be more comfortable, but the summer of 2010 is shaping up to be a hot one in Chicago. This is nothing new as the summers here are frequently broiling. That is of course unless we're having one of those occasional abnormal ones where it never warms up at all; 1992 and 2004 spring to mind. As hot as it's been (so far), this year doesn't hold a candle to the infamous summer of 1995 when the city endured 42 days of temps above 90 degrees. The hottest day in modern Chicago history was recorded on July 13, 1995 when the mercury soared to 106 degrees with a heat and humidity index of 124. That summer was so relentlessly hot that over 500 people died of heat related causes. The Cook County Medical Examiners Office was so over run with corpses that refergerated trucks were set up outside the building to handle the overflow. Every time it gets hot and stays that way, long time Chicagoans find their minds wandering back to that surreal summer with a feeling of mild dread and wonder. Perhaps bringing up the ghosts of 1995 isn't such a great idea only half way throught the summer, so I'm going to shut up now and leave you with this shot made near my house recently. It was actually only 94 degrees at the time but with the humidity factored in the sign is about right. Photographed at Lawrence and Kimball Aves in the Albany Park area of Chicago on July 16, 2010.

I remember the summer of 1995. I had a case of endocolitis, which is just a fancy-schmancy way of saying a humdinger of a virus with a real interest in my gastrointestinal tract; I walked to the emergency room on one of the hotter days, only to be told that there was nothing to be done except camp out in the can. I don't know if I remember the heat because of bathroom tiles, or if I remember bathroom tiles because of the heat, but suffice it to say, I remember that summer and other broilers. THIS year is globally hot: Prague and Moscow and Kiev are getting hammered by the heat as well. I'm also having my normal heat-related cluster headaches, which ain't fun!!!! But hey, that's what summer's all about, right? This is such a stark photo and that temperature is quite jarring. Oh, give me more temperate weather any day! Great shot!

Agghhh!! Not for me, thanks. It rarely breaks 90 here, let alone 100, but last year it got up to 105 one day. Meh ... that's not fit for man nor beast. Today was nice here ... low 70s I believe ... and we're looking forward to a couple more weeks of the same! Lovely stuff. Come to Seattle, my friend! :)

I lived in Phoenix till I graduated from high school. Temps in the summer often exceeded 110--and there were those infamous days of 120--talk about HOT!! However, as they say, it was a DRY heat, and yes you CAN fry eggs on the sidewalk, our dog was so happy!! But a 124 in the humidity index, omg. You can't even breathe!! On the flip side of all that, I'll gladly send you some of the summer fog that prevails where I live now!!

We've been a little above normal the last two weeks, which means that the highs have been reaching 98 and 99 (normal is 95). But we've only hit 100 once as far as I know. Last year we had the hottest July on record and tied a 2006 record for the most 100-plus-degree days in August (24). So it's not as bad as that, but I'm still thinking wistfully of October. Interesting information. Sustained severe weather reminds us of the power of the elements. Since we are still in the Dog Days of Summer, I'm going to shut up now too.
