Description

I made this picture of Chip during one of our typically wide-ranging conversations over books and coffee. What were we talking about? I can't remember exactly, but it was probably something along the lines of how much we missed Kurt Vonnegut, the anti-establishment political ramifications of The Rockford Files, why Chicagoans have a morbid fear of ketchup on their hotdogs, and--since it was probably near dinner-time--the philosophy of pork chops soon to be consumed. Happy Birthday, Chip. Best wishes to someone who is truly a gentleman and a scholar. This picture was made in the 95th Street Borders on the South Side of Chicago in October of 2009.

What a great shot of Chip (which I typoed at first as "Chop", must be Freudian or something!!)-with his nose in a book, coffee at hand. Borders is a wonderful place to hang out for such discussions. However else could you possible understand the philosophy of a pork chop (chip??) Happy Birthday, again!!

What a great informal portrait of Chip. I've never met him but your shot here makes me feel like I know him. Coffee, books and conversation with a good friend - sounds like a perfect day.

WOW! I remember that night! I'm holding one of my favorite books too, The English Patient which was made into a decent enough movie, but the book was so much better. I love the colors in this shot and the crumb of something edible on my sleeve...I think I had one of those crumbly things with a dollop of decadent icing on it. This is quite a cool image, too...I had no idea Borders looked that good as a photographic environment. I love the red, the light, the red, the lady in the background with her hair in a bun, staring at a laptop that just so happens to be a Dell (I know because I'm typing this on a Dell laptop that looks exactly like that, only it's slower and more cranky.) Thank you for the dedication, and such a cool picture to mark it. But then, this picture marks a pretty cool lazy weekend night as well...and if I remember correctly, we did actually buy something to read! I love this!

I do like this image of Chip, deep in a book with cup of coffee and warm congenial surroundings. I like conversations that meander around as they will. Tonight I heard of a woman who climbed a peak in Hawaii on Christmas day with a gentleman she had just met, who knew the climb would be his last, of a small airstrip built in the 60s and now surrounded by San Antonio, which still takes planes but is short, tilted and has a gully at the end, of a Bermuda grass seed found on a grandfather's car seat and sniffed up a grandson's nose, that cause an allergic reaction, and of the joys of running naked into icy water after a long stay in a sauna. I'll take their word on that last one. Excellent image and birthday dedication!
