Our largest and most historic cemetery was just like this one when I first moved here in the last 60s and early 70s. then they realized they had a goldmine in tourist dollars and grant money if they would fix it up. So they had an "adopt a plot" program. People and organizations would decide on a plot they wanted to fix and maintain. They had to go by the historic guidelines - the headstones had to be repaired correctly by a licensed person or if one was being remade, it had to be done with the same type of stone and lettering, etc. Water was hauled in with buckets until they got the faucets put in throughout and now there are sprinkler systems built. Best of all, when the cleaning and clearing began, they found historic roses that dated back to 1850 under all the weeds and clutter. Now they are selling rooted cuttings of those roses... for money...and they have several guided tours through the graves all year long... for money. You can even book a catered dinner outside there...for money. People love old cemeteries. I'd love to see this one you went to!

Interesting to see and wonder why nobody look after the graves a bit better.

A large part of the problem seems to be families dying out. Sad but excellent capture Jock!

Very old graveyard! When I was a kid, there was an old one that we had to ride our bicycles though when we took a trail in the woods up to the stores. It was from back in the late 1700 to the early 1800. It's more creepy when your young. ;) Great capture!
Faemike55
Great capture, Jocko. 'tis a shame that they let these graveyards go to waste.

Just wondering Jock if this is the grave yard in "New Orleans" that has been shown in so many movies over the years? P/S Great capture.
redchilicat
Really sad that nobody keeps up the graveyard. Great shot!

Cool capture, Jock. Oh boy, I bet this is fun at night when the dead rise from their graves to wander about looking for victims. Or to at least scare the hell out of anyone hanging around the cemetery. All that and snakes, too! Hope you were wearing thick boots. Where angels fear to tread.

This is such a interesting place. Great shot!

It does seem like an old grave yard with a lot of history behind it. Some of my family plots here that runs back in the 1800th looks very similar. LOL on that guy running away when he saw your son with a machete. It reminds me of cutting banana stumps and I ran into a homeless guy sleeping in the banana patch. I didn't mean to scare him but he yelled and ran in panic....
