Description

This is Saint-Louis gate in the walled fortifications that surround most of the old city of Quebec. Built in 1873. I am standing on La Rue Saint-Louis. The photo was taken in the 80s and then scanned recently. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

JAMES WOLFE WIN THAT GATE ;-) British conquest of New France on the Plains of Abraham (Québec) 250 years later opinions continue to be diverse, some antagonistic, and some humorous and some saying lets get on with it. Regardless it makes great theatre and should be commemorated every year. Many interest groups in Canada from First Nations, to golfers to Sir Paul McCartney, Celine Dion fans have had a relationship with the Plains of Abraham. :)

I remember riding the bus through this gate the summer of 1973. Mother exclaimed "We haven't bought any souvenirs during our visit". I slowly pulled out a little plastic skeleton key chain with red eyes and held it up. The entire bus burst out with laughter. It's little things like that that make life fun. I recall being impressed with this gate, particularily spending work and money to build it in 1873, when there no longer was any threat to the city (as opposed to 120 years earlier). I also recall a tourist "guide" (?) telling people the peace treaty surrendering Quebec to England (1763) was signed in the Chateau Frontenac, a hotel built in the late 1800s! That was a real laugh! Thanks for the pic and the revived memories! :)

Wonderful shot! Feel quite feudal, if the cars weren't there I could be transported in time. Wonderful.
