Description

These are the Saint George Cross 4th Class and the Romanov 300th Anniversary Medal. The St. George Cross' serial number puts it as awarded prior to WWI. The St. George Cross was awarded for bravery in combat. It came in four classes. Enlisted men and NCOs usually got the 3rd and 4th Class crosses. Being awarded even the 4th Class granted certain rights, the chief amongst them is that the owner was immune to corporal punishment. This was a tremendous right for an enlisted man or NCO in the Imperial Russian armed forces, in which beatings were doled out in a frequency that would appall us today. (The owner could still be hanged or shot, just not beaten or whipped.) A small stipend was also received. The Romanovs came to power in 1613. The 1913 anniversary included the obligatory medal for all serving members of the Russian military. After all, 300 years in power was quite an achievement. These medals belonged to the same man. On the reverse of each of the stiffened ribbons is a piece of paper and, in Cyrillic, a description of the medal. My Russian is very poor, so when I post the reverse of these medals, I hope those of you who know the language can translate it. Thank you for the look, and especially for any comment you leave. Big thanks to all of you who have favorited me or one of my works.

How fascinating...especially about the severity of punishments in the Imperial Russian Army.

Great shots, and the historical perspective (as usual) is wonderful. The Russian Army's main tactic in WWI (and somewhat in WWII) were multiple charges with massive waves of men. In WWI, it was not unusual for some of the men in the latter waves to not even have weapons: They were expected to retrieve weapons from the bodies of their fallen comrades. Now THAT was brutal!
