Description
For my first take on Ariel, I kept true to Disney's vision more or less--but the mermaids that Disney showed us, arrogant but civilized or at least vain and civilized, are not the mermaids of classical mythology. Mermaids have their origin in the bloody, violent, turbulent mythology of Mesopotamia. They were dark seducers, luring sailors to an untimely death, like the sirens of Greek mythology. I decided to portray Ariel in a manner worthy of the Akkadian goddess Asgartis herself. It's the same face, but a darker, more sinister texture, hairstyle, and tail color. Still beautiful, but now it's an exotic, deadly beauty, "treacherous as the sea, stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love [her] and despair!" Thank you, Peter Jackson. -_-
