Description

A closer view of this oasis of shade. At best, the shade is 3 meters at it's widest. That strip of shade is an oasis for any traveler come high summer. The mass of sandstone, a bastion of cool rock where one can take refuge from the unrelenting sun. The native peoples would prize and remember such spots where year round shade could be found. Behind the red rock and corral colored sand in the distance is the Kiabab Plateau. Although this area looks like desert, technically speaking it is not considered within one of the four major U.S. deserts. The Mojave desert ends just on the other side of the Kaibab plateau to the west. The Great Basin desert begins a short distance to the northwest in Utah and the Sanoran desert stops south of interstate 40. Thanks for the kind support on my last image. I love these stacks and I think if I wandered the area, I would remember where to find them too. I imagine the wildlife also seeks refuge here too... like snakes, spiders and lizards. Guess I'd have to visit often to make sure they didn't find a permanent home in the shade - which would cause me to think twice about crawling into one of these sheltered spot. LOL Fabulous shot!

All of the little squiggles and indentations on the structure on the left made me think of a decorated pot. It has a distinctive lid too. The pointed one to the right of it looks like a face with one eye open to see who is coming by. Excellent color and detail! The background is beautiful too with the lovely green area in the distance and the wonderfully shaped and textured clouds. Beautiful structures and great capture!
