Description
(Bug Comic)
This follows "A Shirt at 8:15 AM", as you can see Bryan ended up with the red shirt that was on Staci's arm in that image, and it turns out that it was good that he had a new shirt, because it *was* a big deal once he got to the Dean's office. Not only had he gotten a study grant ("Drive Thru Pudding"), but also the Allen prize, which not only will pay for his tuition, but comes with a very nice apartment across from the botanical gardens. It's a prestigious prize from a private endowment, and the University is pretty happy about it too.
Bryan would have been thrilled if the prize was just a little certificate--it meant that someone besides his faculty advisor had read his thesis on "Rove Beetles and Integrated Pest Management", and liked it. I'm thinking that part of it was that Bryan was the candidate that *everyone* in the department could agree on, since he is very well liked, and always ready to help grade papers, move lab equipment, and help befuddled hockey players and sorority princesses make it through basic biology. The fact that the habits of rove beetles were mysterious to most of the other professors probably didn't hurt, either.;)
Anyway, the press *was* there, most of the faculty of the Life Sciences department, and there was cake. Really good cake. Bryan was so thrilled that he forgot about not showing his teeth in photos and spent most of the morning with a huge grin on his face and holding his trophy, and shaking people's hands. The Allen Prize had an appropriate ladybug on it (with the right number of spots, too), one of the first insects to be used in organic pest management.
And Bryan even liked the silly sunflowers that the Press Liason had set up for photos.
--------------------------------------
I had a lot of fun doing this one, though it's not great art (it shows up later as a black and white newspaper image, which is why I had to do it anyway), partly because once upon a time I was the administrator for an obscure national award, and the joy on people's faces when we gave out the awards (which the year I did it, were pretty sad little plaques) made for some of the best memories I have :)
Poser was no help with Bryan this time--halfway through morphing Poser threw up it's tiny hands and said it had no idea what I was trying to do, so it's mostly painted from scratch. The Dean of Life Sciences is gypsyangel's Natalia for Sp4, tweaked, at RDNA.

It's refreshing to see him grinning like a possum! And his happy ears just top it all off. The tie dyed shirt and her dress are just fabulous! Oh, the Ladybug is the perfect choice for this award!!

I love this! Having been through grad school biology, having coached many a flunky and having seen the looks of spliting pride on the faces of peers when they got an award I have to say you just nailed this moment. And the look of pride on the deans face is just so great, although in real life this would most likely be a department head as Deans are pretty removed from the knowing of individual students. But overall this is a classic capture of a special moment. Sorry, I had to erase original because I forgot to add something really important and that is because you said that the beetle had the right number of spots. You would not believe how important that is to a systematist getting an award. These people devote their lives to separating species based on 21, 22 or 23 spots and when a trophy is done right, it shows the grantor really had respect. I've seen people crushed because the award given was not systematicaly correct. Well done.

If you're happy and you know it, show your teeth! :o) He does look genuinely pleased- no easy feat with Poser alone! Your painting is what makes it unique, so to heck with what Poser has to say! Another fantastic installment!

LOL @ happy ears! I bet that was a hassle trying to morph. I'm still trying to figure out how exactly to do swivel and flatten with Elke's ears since the mesh is split right at the ears. I really love the detail you paint in their faces and skin features. I wish I could do that. It's great to see him get a few perks! still sniggering about happy ears heh heh

Now that is one really cute looking image. Very nice work on your characters. Your scene is pretty awesome, and Bryan looks like he just won the Academy Award. "And I'd like to thank the Academy, for recognizing my greatness..." Nice work!

nice image... great art or not - i like it... typical - the photos for awards or nobel price... all the guys are to grinning like a cheshire cat ( and later if they see themselve, are they asking - is these strange guy - me?). But let's hope, that Bryan will have further best days... ------------------------------------------------------------- Nice lenses in the glases... And also nice diamonds in her necklace.

i absolutely love this one. the expressions are very apt and make you smile in response. i like the sunflowers too; they fit the mood. the trophy is both cool and kind of funny, in the way that really geeky artifacts are. looking at the figures, the bare shoulders emphasize the weaknesses of the base figures behind the characters. the work you've added, like Bryan's ears, teeth and hands, looks great. the shirt suits him a lot better than the other one. Bryan does look a little too old, but i think that's a very slight effect. i like how expressive the lines make his face.
