Description

The Art of Boolean (Part 47) On September 2 2004, I uploaded a wire frame showing the command module HAB section for a spaceship that I was designing called the USS Shenandoah. Now August 7, 2010 I am uploading the redesign for this spaceship. The command module HAB now has over 47000 individual parts and before I finish this project should have quite a bit more. I posted the redesign engine section, which has over 42000 parts last month, and so now, with these two sections the count stands at over 89000 parts and growing. The poly count at this time is 5493280 and that does not include the redesign Lander or the support frame that will hold the Lander to the Shenandoah. The model with just these two sections weighs in at over 486 Megs, which leads to another problem that I am facing. Bryce 7 Pro so far has not been able to handle these files and so I still have to use Bryce 5.5 to be able to load both parts. I feel that DAZ has done quite an excellent job getting Bryce 7 to market but it still needs to address large file sizes. I hope in the coming months DAZ will finally resolve this issue, as I would love to import these files so they can be rendering with 7 Pro. Even though Bryce was never, design to be a modeling program as you can see with a little effort and imagination, it is amazing what one can do using just the primitives that comes with the program. In addition, now since the new version has added quite a few new shapes I cannot wait to start using these objects to see what new design one can construct. If anyone is interested, I will be posting most of the parts for this ship as I finish them, some here and quite a few more at my website. Thanks again for taking the time to view my work. Cheers, David

486MB? I use Bryce 5.5c with WinXP still and I do not think I can load a file that size. Good job though.

This is remarkable. I think that the size of an item Bryce can accept will depend on the amount of RAM you have. Please however post a bug report if you can use Bryce 5.5 to handle this and not Bryce 7.

Bummer about Bryce 7 not handling it. I'm assuming 6.3 didn't do much better than 6.1, then. Maybe if they get to 64-bit and make more of their routines multi-threaded (not just the rendering). Very nicely done, by the way.

To do this in Bryce takes a lot more than just a little effort methinks David!! :) Superb modeling!!

Truly impressive modelling in Bryce!! I admire your brycing skills and also your patience for such projects! (I have Bryce7 Pro too, but consider it still too buggy and crashy. Will wait for the next patches and continue to use my good old Bryce4 instead, although having versions 5.x and 6.3 too. ;)

Really nicely done David -- I've been following the redesign posts on your site. Your works sets a standard in finely detailed and credible design -- the work is excellent. I just purchased Bryce 7 Pro and spent the past week exploring its capabilities. I've been surprised by the same kind of resource-limit lock-ups and crashes, however I do like the lighting options and render engine, the performance of which is spectacular -- I think it's going to be a very nice edition once these few bugs are ironed out.

What David said is true - 5.5/6.3 handles large files better than later versions. I'm going to be using B7 to create parts rather than scenes. And it's not about RAM. David is an absolute master at this stuff. His images really show what Bryce can do with just prims and booleans. I recommend a tour through his gallery and website.

I stand in awe and applaud the effort you have placed into this model.Unbelievable Workmanship!!..As a fellow model builder I only know too well what's involved and I can say with appreciation that you have your hands full when you decide the textures you'll be using to bring this into final render form.Extremely Well Done!!...Bravo! -Will-

Awesome.. To BAd the new B7 can not do what B5 can do... See what happens when another company buys a software company then tries to upgrade it.. They need to get some serious programmers to do it right..Have not used bryce for some years..But your work is like really awesome... Now back to the Bryce problem.. If they compiled it to use memory management and multithread support and compiled it to use 64 bit tech it would be an awesome program.. I have asked then a few times When will it support 64 bit.. No Answer yet... figures.. They really are not selling 32 bit computers any more the 32 bit is on its way out.. You Think they would see that ... Ya Think .. ?? Nope guess not.. So I guess I will wait till they have no choice.. Bryce has a Fantastic Raytrace Render Engine, one of the top ones.. They just need to come out of the Dark Ages and Upgrade the program to Utilize the 64 bit so memory management and the Multithread support, so you could load 2 gig of models... My i7 903 machine can handel 2 gig models fine, (3dMax and Lightwave etc etc) and Bryce is just dog slow on the computer... Utilizes 1 cpu out of 8 wow rats... Well till next awesome image you post.. Have a great day :) Michael

I cannot even fathom how you do this.. The complexity of the model boggles the mind.. Knowing you have achieved this in Bryce is astounding! Bravo!

Absolutely incredible all of my wires are red, about time i colour coded them, polys here are incredible and objects sheeeesh, numbing. As you know ive manages 50+ million polys and bryce still responds...all be it slowly, i use xp 64 pro, 16gb ram, quad core cpu, it helps a lot, but you can kill bryce.....pinhead always asked me to go further, guess he was interested in just how far the programme can go.........its a looooong way lol.
