Description

We had breakfast at the nearly empty dining room on our first morning at the Otsu Youth Hostel. About mid-morning, right on cue, two buses of Japanese high school students arrived and invaded the place. They quickly established a beachhead in the community room. They were a noisy but friendly and well behaved bunch. That evening they gathered in the community room to play games. One game consisted of two teams of eight players each sitting facing each other in a row. Between each pair of opponents was a rolled up newspaper. The moderator asked each student a question. If the correct answer was given his or her opponent was then asked a question. If a wrong answer was given by a student that student was wacked on the head with the newspaper by the opponent facing them to much laughter. Once the end of the row was reached those who had answered incorrectly were replaced by other members of their team. And so it went until only the members of one team were left. This was one time I was glad I did not speak Japanese. I’m sure I would have been beaten black and blue.

Wonderful story! Definitely a good time to have an excuse not to participate. Great image! Is that Amy in the back again? Did you get a chance to talk to any of the high school students? Very interesting to see all the activity.

This reminds me of a night I spent at a lodge recently here in Tennessee with a friend. We were in the upstairs area of the lodge, beautiful place, and upstairs they had an area with games and tables so me and my friend were playing a game of scrabble, and these two Japanese boys got out a game of Life and were trying to play it by reading instructions and making it so serious it was sooo funny to watch them I use to play that game with my sister, and then later my daughters and it was so funny to watch it played by someone from a different country, it made the world seem so much smaller and friendlier.. thanks for your stories they are a joy~ by the way Erin is doing a bit better, this is here third day of school she has missed this week so far. But she is sound asleep still this morning and hopefully the medicines they gave her are starting to kick in.
