Description

Kyoto is a city in the central part of the island of Honshū, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the imperial capital of Japan, it is now the capital of Kyoto Prefecture. Historically Kyoto was the largest city in Japan, however by 1990 it had fallen to 7th place. Kyoto contains roughly 2,000 temples and shrines. There was some consideration by the United States of targeting Kyoto with an atomic bomb at the end of World War II. In the end it was decided to remove the city from the list of targets due to it’s status as a shrine city. The city was largely spared from conventional bombing as well. As a result, Kyoto is one of the few Japanese cities that still has an abundance of prewar buildings. The buildings in this image are between sevety-five and one hundred years old. In 1994 Kyoto was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

I love the sepia, it looks like a WWII era photo. Perfect perspective too. Thanks for the history too, very interesting. I'm glad it was not bombed into dust.

It sees from as if the time stands quietly - the colonial age. Beautiful sepia colors.

Kyoto was one of the places we were ambushed by school children. This is a great image! Wonderful perspective! Excellent sepia effect. I love seeing all the Kanji. I remember being thrilled when I would see a place name I recognised (there weren't many.) One was Tachikawa because it was very simple, and there was an air base there (I learned to drive stick shift on its disused flight line). Very interesting information. I enjoyed my visit to Kyoto very much. I'm thankful it was spared the bombs.
