Description

"Chagford seems to have it all - a vibrant local community, an easy-going way of life and a picturesque setting on the edge of Dartmoor". So states the BBC web page. Who am I to argue with Aunti Beeb! ^=^ Chagford is an ancient Stannary town on the edge of Dartmoor. It is close to another beautiful stretch of water, the River Teign. For those that do not know the meaning of a Stannary town, it is - or was - a designated town where the tin miners of the South West (tinners as known), were abliged to take their smelted tin blocks to be tested for purity before a tax was paid by the miners under a charter set up by King John in 1201. There is not a country on this planet without Cornish tin in its bronze or pewter ware. This has been the case since AD 410. There is a site below, full of information for anyone who would like to peruse it. What Chagford also has is a wonderful reservoir and woodland that can be walked in peace and solitude no matter what time of year. I took this late last year, and it was on this day that I realised just what a hard winter we were going to get. Berries hung in great quanities from the blackthorn shrubs, and as nature really does know best, I figured I'd better get some warmer clothing! ^=^ Thank you for taking the time to look, and also for the lovely comments and favourite tags. I usually manage to peruse all that I can, but sometimes this darned disease gets the better of me so you'll have to forgive me if I am a little lax. ^=^ Now go read! 'Tis very interesting. ^=^ http://www.cornish-mining.org.uk/story/medieval.htm
