Description
Here is another image of Postbridge on Dartmoor and its wonderful Clapper Bridge. It's another I trawled from the annals of a 'shall I, shan't I post' images in a long forgotten folder.
For those that might be interested, there are many Clapper bridges throughout Devon - and Cornwall, come to that. Most are very old, one or two being really ancient, dating back to the 5th century AD. There is one from that time in Cardinham Woods which was used by the villagers to get to the church deep within the woods. That one is now protected by fencing so can't be used, thankfully.
This one was built in the 1780's so is much more recent and consists of 4 granite slabs that weigh 8 tons each, and it spans the East Dart river on the beautiful Dartmoor.
Because Postbridge lies between Two Bridges (busy to the point of frenetic from May until Augusts' end) and Moretonhampstead, this lovely village rarely gets overrun, even in high summer. There is a lovely inn, a small post office/shop and an information centre in the village so for anyone wanting to catch ones breath in peaceful surroundings whilst sitting next to a sparkling river, this place is idyllic.

Beautiful! When I was still making porcelain thingies for a part living I used to sell some to the Stable House Gallery in Lustleigh, which gave access onto the low moor for fab walks. But I never went to this lovely place in your pic. BYW they did FABULOSO cakes at the teashop in that village!

This is a real bridge, and its funny that the most basic bridges made from ready available material like this stand head and shoulders above the minamalist creations you see today imo.

Such a marvelous piece of history. I find it somewhat sad it can't be used though. The feeling of sharing foot space with those who have crossed in the far distance lives would be marvelous.

Granite slabs huh? Ya know...those UK people (like their distant, distant, very distant Polynesian cousins) got really good at moving those things around like they were light-weight pieces of cork or something. That in and of itself is impressive, but the real joy is seeing moved granite slabs arranged into a gorgeous little bridge, in a gorgeous little town, captured in a really stunningly gorgeous photo. I really like this immensely. I'll have to visit (hopefully in the company of a particular, occasionally terse Russian--well...terse because his English ain't so good.)
