Description
Bodmin Moor in mid winter has all the ingredients one could ever need to write a book of legends. Without having to delve into the actual darker side of its history, simply staring out over this nine hundred acre lake at the Tors beyond, their summits partially hidden in swirling storm clouds is enough for the imagination to conjure up scenes of headless horsemen thundering across the expanse towards you. When a storm brews, wind whips up the water, and the calm surface becomes a cauldron of activity, the surf thundering onto the shore, more akin to a rough sea than a lake.
Colliford Lake is actually a reservoir and it covers an area of 900 acres. It is south of Jamaica Inn, the favourite haunt of smugglers in times gone by, and made famous by Daphne du Maurier. It's also an important overwintering refuge for many water fowl.
I rarely wander far in the winter and certainly not on the moor, but I'd taken a bale of hay up there on this day after seeing how many of the ponies were suffering from lack of food. They are quite a hardy bunch, but the winter was particularly harsh last year, even for them. There were a number of people up there feeding them alongside me, just everyday folk doing their bit to help the ponies.
Before the sleet started again, I put the camera on an outcrop of granite and took this image. It was the coldest I've known the moor to be, and it was certainly the coldest I had felt in a while. 5 minutes after this was taken I was sitting in the car drinking hot coffee and eating a blueberry muffin! Heaven!!
Thank you for taking the time to look. ^=^

Wow...what atmosphere in this photo! It does look very cold and rather bleak and I know that MY imagination would take flight! When I hear mention of the moors, my mind goes to The Highwayman... When the moon is a ghostly galleon, tossed upon the cloudy seas....

Oh, this is begging for a story! There are so many in here; rather like looking at an image and knowing that it's full of digital watermarks--instead of watermarks, there are whole compacted narratives. I think it's all in your treatment of the photo: the darkened monocrome with hints of sepia. This looks like a clear, antique photo, or a modern photo taken on a day when time just happened to slide out of synch with itself. At any rate, it's rich and evocative and a wee bit spooky. I like it when things are a wee bit spooky. This is brilliant work!
