Description

Kiyomizu-dera was founded in the early Heian period. The temple dates back to 798, and its present buildings were constructed in 1633, during a restoration ordered by the Tokugawa Iemitsu. Not one nail is used in the whole temple. The large veranda of the main hall shown here is supported by tall pillars that jut out over the hillside. The popular expression "to jump off the stage at Kiyomizu" is the Japanese equivalent of the English expression "to take the plunge". This refers to an Edo period (1603-1868) tradition that held that, if one were to survive a 43 foot (13m) jump from the veranda, one's wish would be granted. Two hundred thirty-four jumps were recorded during this period and, of those, 85.4% survived. The practice is now prohibited.

Very beautiful building! Shame that they prohibit the practice - better than bungee-jumping really Thanks

A beautiful structure portrayed to advantage in this finely composed image. Mushrooms might help one prepare for such a leap.  ;-) I'll tell ya', though, if I don't get my wish granted after a 43 foot plunge .. I'm taking the beef up to management. I'm looking forward to your trip now.  In catching up I will get to enjoy your trip in near to real time rather than having it doled it at one glimpse per day.  ;-) With warmth, Terry

I can't fathom jumping off this! I guess their wish was to have a peaceful life with others taking care of their every whim because the odds are if you survived you be in a near vegetative state anyway!!! LOL Really awesome shot. Oh, I will contact you with our meeting date soon but if you can't make it then and are in the area, we'll see if we can grab a cup of coffee together at least. :-)

What an absolutely beautiful shot. A truly spectacular piece of architecture. It does remind me of my brother's Lincoln logs, the way they fit together. Great story to go with your stunning photo. I love it.

I know I went to Kyoto, but I don't remember seeing this, the classic view. I think I would have remembered! This is beautiful! Wonderful capture! I do remember the no nails info. It seems a steep price. A rub of a genie's lamp will get you three wishes!
