... As a young man - WHY? Does not come up Until ONE, Finds/Discovers Themselves THERE! WHY? Is too late a question, by then. _____ *Viet Nam - 1970 .

When I come up on the question of war, I invariably leave the question no wiser than before. There are so many tendrils, so many points of view and sides to the question that it boggles the mind.

The eternal question--I wish there was a simple answer. Thought provoking, and poignant words.

I once heard a guy say that the reasons for war were as numerous as human beings on the face of the planet. He went on to say that the reasons to avoid war were as numerous as human beings on the planet. Excellent point, especially since the implication carried in his tone of voice indicated, undoubtedly, that every human being on the planet deserved the opposite of death and destruction that war brings! I look at the issue of war, and I sometimes see a certain logic behind certain wars--especially if such wars were fought simply to end atrocities committed by those who'd continue to commit them, were war not waged against them; but I also see wars that seem to indicate just how far we have yet to go in the process of becoming civilized. Your piece encapsulates that.

"After all, this is the guy who tried to kill my dad." George W. Bush, 09-27-2002 and "Iraq holds more than 112 billion barrels of oil - the world's second largest proven reserves." US Energy Information Administration (EIA and Because young men and women are immortal and miserable, greedy old men and women hate youth. But we can't dwell on these truths. After all, we have another war to plan.

Well said! But it is not the soldier's failing. For "Why?" is neither in the soldier's lexicon, nor is it his option. The blame falls on me and many like me who did not ask "Why?" loudly enough. I've been asking that question since 1968; but it's not about me. After all, so far "Why?" just isn't getting heard. We must all ask more loudly!
