A year ago I would have told you this: The internet is good for meeting friends And that is all. But oh, such wond'rous friends! My heart has stretched to Afrika and back To Illinois and England's sandy shore Where those quite dear to me live out their lives ... But on-line romance is for other souls. Today I'll tell you quite another tale: That just one month from now I plan to wed The man I've waited for my whole life through Not knowing he was out there, marking time We met on line ... on Renderosity ... You never know what's around the corner.

No Twitter or Facebook for me. I don't even have a cell phone. I meet kindred spirits here. I do understand the sentiment however.

I remember the "good old days" and wonder how I survived without gnawing my head off. I'm no fan of Facebook in and of itself, but I deeply appreciate WHAT Facebook is for so many people: a vital link to friends met during traveling, a way to reach out (or even back to old college buddies or high-school sweethearts). I have a theory that the digital realm is a complex and subjective picture of humanity, as well as our innermost needs. We satisfy those needs when we recognize them and utilize all of the tools at our disposal. This is a great piece of writing you've done, and it's drawn quite a number of wonderful responses from those who've paused to read what you've written. THAT is always a good thing, and I'm glad to have read what you wrote. AND--you said quite eloquently--something my maternal grandfather said once: "What you put into something is what you get out. If you make the effort to BE a friend then you GET a friend," and well...that law of reality works just as completely in cyberspace: more efficiently, in fact, since without flesh and blood getting in the way, or truest desires and impulses tend to shine more brightly.
