Description
The Malavoglia's Fountain is a sculptural group located in Giovanni Verga Square, Catania, designed by Carmelo Mendola, a self-taught sculptor of Catania (1895-1976) who won with his project, despite the scepticism of many, the contest who the town banned 10 November 1956 to build a great monument dedicated to Giovanni Verga, to be positioned at the centre of the homonymous square. The realization of the complex sculptural lasted more than 19 years and ended October 25, 1975.
The subject of the work is the dramatic scene of the sinking of the "Providence", the ship of Malavoglia (a poor fisherman's family) of homonymous novel by Verga in 1881.
