Description
This lake and the area around it is owned by Imery's, those of Clay pit fame and it's a popular place with fishermen. It was also, at one time, a favourite haunt of all those with webbed feet! Now only a few unwary winged visitors alight on its surface. I don't know what sort of communication such beasts use but it has become obvious that warnings have been given and received, even among the different species.
I dont' know for certain just what else besides fish and frogs lives in the lake, but during our very wet and misty summer of last year, we watched in horror as 2 Canada geese lost all 4 of their young. Whatever it was, took them by their feet and dragged them under, and from the speed it occurred I'm guessing it wasn't just one creature but two or more, and there wasn't a darned thing we could do about it. Up until that time, Mitzi swam in the lake. From that day, she did not. Not that she was swimming much by that time anyway. But even if she had been, no way was she ever going to venture into that lake.
I'm guessing what is in that lake is Pike. Very large Pike at that. I've seen what they can do, and this seems to follow the pattern. However, it's only a guess. It could be some animal from a private collection of crocs or aligators. Certainly those stupid enough to keep such beautiful animals in captivity would also be stupid enough to release them into a lake when the novelty wore off, but I'm still of the opinion it's Pike, as I know Pike are often added to a fishing area. They pick off the weak and keep the general populus healthy, so perhaps that is the case here. They are simply doing what they are born for. I would still rather have not been a witness to it though.
I sneakily took this whilst my daughter was trying to photograph a Coot prior to the carnage. Post carnage, every other bird that was on the lake at the time had taken flight, including a Heron. The parent geese however, after much noise just swam for a while around the area where their goslings had been. They too left after around 30 minutes. I've not seen one goose on the lake since, although the odd Coot still arrives from time to time.
Thank you for taking the time to look. ^=^

Super atmospheric photo, and a fascinting story. I hope it is pike and not some prat's ex-pet.

If I had been there, we'd know for sure what sort of fish lived there. I couldn't resist putting a hook in and catching a few. :-)

Many many questions arise from your dialogue, but I can give no answer. A wonderful image and deep searching thoughts.

Nice shot! In my area that situation with the geese would be due to snapping turtles. We lose a lot of waterfowl to them. Makes me feel old to know my shirt would have read class of 1979 (smiles).
