Description

I started my trip into the Canadian Rookies about an hour east of Edmonton, in Elk Island National Park of Canada. Wayne (Whaleman) has done an outstanding job, showing all of us, all around Elk Island, so this will be my only post from there. This is a Wood Bison and it differs from the American Bison (American Buffalo). Most notably, the Wood Bison is heavier, with large males weighing over 2,000 pounds (900 kg), making it the largest terrestrial animal in North America. Wood bison also have larger horn cores. I spent an entire day hiking there and it is the horns that I remember. THERE ARE NO FENCES TO HIDE BEHIND. Elk Island National Park, with an area of 194 km², protects the wilderness of the aspen parkland, one of the most endangered habitats in Canada. This beautiful oasis is home to herds of free roaming bison, moose, deer, elk, coyotes, and beavers. Also boasting over 250 species of birds, the park is a bird watcher's paradise, with Red-necked Grebe, American White Pelican, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Red Tailed Hawk, American Bittern and the Trumpeter Swan to name a few. Some info from Wikipedia. Please zoom. This series was taken with a film Pentax camera (July & August 1988) and recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Stunning! I love the fact that bison are so...naked in the back and so incredibly shaggy in front, it makes them look a bit front-heavy! You really captured this guy in his full, grazing glory and it's a top notch shot all around. Wonderful!

This is one big boy Dana! I wouldn't want to mess with him! I am wondering if they are also so unpredictable and dangerous as their cousins in Africa - the Cape Buffalo??? Wonderful shot!

Absolutely one stellar profile image of that big brute of a bison, Dana, with interesting information to go with it! It seems to be digging up or burying something. The last time I saw an image like that was on a nickel.

Aha, this is the shot you mentioned! Thanks for the kind words Dana! That certainly is my area. They are just amazing to watch and this is a great shot! Right now we have a little excitement up here as about 30 bison escaped from a farm south of Edmonton and still remain at large. They are proving difficult to capture, ha ha! Anyone who has tried will know they are next to impossible to herd, and are sometimes used in rodeos for cutting competitions as they are particularly adept at outsmarting horse movements. I suspect they will never get all of them back, but right now the risk to motorists is high as the animals are very scared from being chased for the past day.
