Description
They find the bar alright. It looks a little more run down than Ridge remembers, but the ‘Open’ sign is still hanging outside. They go inside to investigate. There aren’t many patrons this time of day. The bartender growls at them, ‘What do ya want?’ Joey gets a grape nehi, as usual. The guys settle for a dark tap beer.
They go and sit down at a table. Before long, a stranger sitting by himself in a corner, comes over and asks if he can buy them a round. He seems friendly enough so they say ok and invite him to join them. He is a local rancher, they find out. His family have lived here for several generations. But, he is afraid the end may be near for his bloodline. He is an only child and has found out he is sterile as well. Funny what a little beer talk will bring out in a conversation.
The rancher mentions the Cadillac Ranch outside town. Both Ridge and Clint remember it from previous trips through the area, but Joey has never heard of it before. They discuss that for awhile,
Then the rancher says, ‘Have you ever heard of the CarHenge sculpture near here!’ Neither Clint nor Ridge have heard of it. He says that’s good. It is a closely guarded family secret, shown only to family and close family friends. Since he has gotten to know our travelers fairly well in the past couple hours, he feels like they are close friends of his family, and offers to take them out to see the CarHenge.
He explains that his grandpappy wanted to start a car company after World War II and even went so far as to have several prototypes built. He couldn’t find any investors and gave up the idea. One drunken night, he had an idea; create a sculpture way out in the back country with the prototypes. Once created, he felt kind of foolish. So he fenced it in for family only.
The guys are very interested and say they’d love to see it. Everyone piles into the ranchers crew cab Dodge and drive many miles out of town. They turn off onto a private dusty old country trail and before long, they are confronted by some huge gates blocking the way. The rancher presses a button on the truck dash and the gates swing open. They drive through and the gates slam shut behind them. They travel down several more miles of dusty trails, winding through hills and valleys and suddenly, they come around a corner and there is the sculpture, just as the rancher had described it. They are quite amazed and pleased. Another press of the dash button and they drivei nto the sculpture area. They scramble over to have a closer look at the sculpture and are pleased with what they see.
Suddenly, they hear Joey’s voice yelling at the top of his lungs, ‘I’m the king of the world!’. ‘How’d you get up there?’, Ridge asks as he climbs up to the upper level of the sculpture.
The rancher looks up in astonishement as well. ‘I always wanted to do that but was always too afraid to try it. I’m sure glad I finally saw someone do it!’
They spend another half hour or so visting with the rancher. Then they pile back into his truck and he takes them back to the bar. They thank him for his hospitality and especailly for showing them his family secret. As they say their goodbyes, Clint buys the Rancher a beer and head on down the highway.
That night, they find a gritty old motel along side the road that looks like it jumped out of a B movie Hollywood set. They spend a sleepless night there, wrestling bed bugs and other such critters, and get an early start the next morning.
