Description

This is a Marmot, which is basically a Canadian groundhog, the largest member of the squirrel family. On August 22nd, I spotted a groundhog in our New Hampshire back yard and posted it. Information on groundhogs can be found with that posting. I caught this fellow on the shore of Maligne Lake, in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. S/he was begging for food, right near the sign, threatening fines, for feeding the animals. There were deer, elk and big horn sheep grazing all through the Canadian Rockies. This series was taken with a film Pentax camera (July & August 1988) and recently scanned. Thanks for stopping by, taking a look and for all your previous favs and comments. They are very much appreciated. Dana

Excellent shot Dana! He seems to be a Yellow-bellied Marmot, but I've never seen one with those white eye circles, so perhaps that might be a sub-species. Great capture; they often stand like this to warm up rather than begging but he might have learned to read the signs, LOL!
