Description

San Xavier del Bac is located 10 miles south of Tucson on the Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation. The mission was founded in 1699 by the Jesuit missionary Eusebio Francisco Kino. The original mission church, located about two miles away was destroyed by the Apaches in about 1770. The present building was constructed under the direction of Franciscan Fathers Juan Bautista Velderrain and Juan Bautista Llorenz using mainly native labor from 1783 to 1797. San Xavier is still actively served by Franciscans, and still serves the Native community by which it was built. This picture was taken in December 1984 and later scanned. Great design in the architecture the contrast between the outer wall and the building is very noticable as the wall shares the same color/tone as the ground.

That mission is only a few miles down the road from me. Judging from the shadows I'm guessing it was taken in the afternoon -- can't tell what season though. Wonderful photo
